The chaotic scene outside a New York hotspot that left New York Jets player Kris Boyd critically wounded might have been ignited by something as seemingly trivial as taunts about his fashion sense. The NYPD has shared new details shedding light on the incident that occurred during the player’s night out.
An Argument Over Style Escalates
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the trouble began early Sunday morning, November 16th, as Boyd, along with fellow Jets players Jamien Sherwood and Irvin Charles, and a friend, arrived at Sei Less, a popular Midtown speakeasy. As they approached the entrance, a group of men allegedly began heckling them, mocking their outfits and questioning if they felt superior.
Initially, Boyd and his friends tried to brush off the comments and went inside. However, they reportedly didn’t feel the vibe and decided to leave shortly after. As they exited, they were once again confronted by the same group, who continued to verbally insult them, specifically targeting their clothing and asking, “Do you think you’re better than us?”
From Words to Violence
This time, instead of ignoring the provocations, Boyd and his friends responded, leading to a verbal exchange that rapidly spiraled out of control. Kenny described the situation as a massive, “pretty chaotic” melee involving as many as 60 people. It was during this brawl that a gunman opened fire twice with a 9mm handgun.
One of the bullets struck Kris Boyd in the chest, piercing his lung and lodging in his pulmonary artery. Investigators believe the shooter fled the scene, jumping into a white BMW. Police are also looking into two vehicles of interest seen speeding out of a nearby parking garage, ramming through its gate before heading onto Broadway.
Investigation and Recovery
Thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip and social media posts, detectives have identified a person of interest, though no arrests have been made yet. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to establish probable cause. A valuable watch, reportedly worth $185,000, was also found at the scene and has not been claimed by either group involved.
Kris Boyd, who recently welcomed a new baby, remains hospitalized but is reportedly in stable condition following multiple medical procedures to remove the bullet. He broke his silence on social media, expressing gratitude for the support and sharing that he is beginning to breathe on his own. “God is real, God is powerful,” he wrote, “Iām coming along… Sincerely appreciate everyone.”
