A serious allegation has surfaced against Florida Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who has been federally indicted for allegedly diverting millions in disaster relief funds. The charges claim that these FEMA funds were funneled to support her congressional campaign and for personal gain.
Federal Indictment and Allegations
On November 19, the Department of Justice announced a federal indictment against Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus. Prosecutors allege they conspired to launder approximately $5 million from a FEMA contract awarded to a family business. According to reports, a significant portion of these funds was allegedly used to bolster the lawmaker’s 2021 congressional campaign.
The indictment, handed down by a Miami grand jury, also includes charges that Cherfilus-McCormick used straw donors to move FEMA funds to associates, who then contributed to her campaign. Furthermore, she faces charges for conspiring to file a false federal tax return. FBI Director Kash Patel tweeted, “This individual and her family allegedly stole money from FEMA and then laundered it through friends toward her own personal benefits — including her campaign accounts. Today the FBI and partners at @TheJusticeDept took action. No one is above the law.”
A History of Close Elections and Investigations
Cherfilus-McCormick’s political career has seen its share of scrutiny. She secured her seat after a very narrow victory, defeating Dale Holness by just five votes in the 2021 Democratic primary to succeed the late Rep. Alcee Hastings. Her campaign significantly outspent rivals, including a $3.7 million loan she made to her own campaign, before winning the 2022 general election by a landslide.
In 2023, the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into potential campaign finance violations, prompted by additional concerns flagged by the Office of Congressional Conduct. Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the severity of the alleged crime, stating, “Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime. No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain.”
Defense and Future Proceedings
In response to the indictment, attorneys for the congresswoman issued a statement asserting that she is “a committed public servant, who is dedicated to her constituents” and intends to “fight to clear her good name.” The legal proceedings are expected to follow, with the justice system tasked with uncovering the facts of the case.
