The tragic murder of transgender TikTok star Girlalala has sent shockwaves through the online community and beyond. In the wake of this devastating loss, rapper JT is stepping up, not only by contributing to Girlalala’s funeral fund but also by using her voice to address the alarming violence against transgender women.
A Community Mourns Girlalala
Girlalala, whose real name was Maurice Harrison, was a vibrant 21-year-old influencer from South Florida, known for her engaging beauty, lifestyle, and personality-driven content. Tragically, she was found on November 14th with multiple gunshot wounds. Her boyfriend, Shanoyd Whyte Jr., has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Girlalala’s death has reignited critical conversations about domestic violence, particularly within the transgender community. Advocates and friends have highlighted that Black trans women, in particular, face alarmingly high rates of violence, often struggling to have their experiences taken seriously.
JT’s Support and Advocacy
JT, who considered Girlalala an idol, has made a significant contribution of $5,000 to the GoFundMe campaign established in her honor, which has since raised nearly $30,000. Beyond her financial support, JT is actively using her platform to raise awareness about the systemic violence that transgender women endure.
In now-expired Instagram Stories, JT did not hold back, emphasizing the gravity of domestic violence. She stated that society often fails to treat violence within the LGBTQ+ community with the seriousness it deserves, even noting how some Black cis women’s stories of domestic strife are sometimes trivialized for entertainment. ‘ITS NOT!’ she asserted.
A Call for Protection
JT expressed her heartbreak, lamenting the lack of protection for vulnerable individuals in a fast-paced world where everything can become content. She urged the public, ‘If you see something say something!’ She also shared a touching reel of herself and Girlalala, writing a heartfelt tribute: ‘Rest, beautiful girlala! We love you & Heaven will never be boring now that you are there…’
