Invest Atlanta Aids Seniors with Tax Relief

In the face of rising property values and ongoing gentrification, Invest Atlanta is stepping up to help the city’s senior residents stay in their homes. A new anti-displacement and property tax relief program is providing crucial support to financially strained and vulnerable homeowners, ensuring they aren’t priced out of the neighborhoods they’ve helped build.

Targeted Support for Vulnerable Residents

The revitalization of Atlanta, including new apartment complexes and the popular Beltline, has led to increased property values. While this growth attracts new businesses and residents, it also puts pressure on long-time homeowners, especially those on fixed incomes. Invest Atlanta’s program specifically targets these individuals, offering much-needed tax support to prevent displacement.

The initiative has already benefited approximately 425 Atlanta homeowners. Notably, over three-quarters of the recipients are Black women, highlighting the program’s impact on a particularly vulnerable demographic. Beyond tax relief, Invest Atlanta also provides downpayment assistance for essential city workers like teachers and first responders.

Eligibility and Impact

The eligibility requirements for the program are designed to be straightforward. Homeowners must have owned their Atlanta residence since 2015, be 60 years or older, provide proof of ownership, and have a household income at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Active enrollment in qualifying homestead exemption programs and the absence of liens are also necessary.

Kathryn Cooper, a resident who has lived in her home for over 30 years, shared her relief after benefiting from the program. “It was a relief to know I would get to stay in my home despite all the change around me,” she told 11Alive. This program offers peace of mind to seniors who feared losing their homes due to escalating costs.

Balancing Growth and Preservation

Dr. Eloisa Klementich, CEO of Invest Atlanta, emphasized the program’s goal: to support those who have contributed to the city’s fabric. “We want to continue to welcome people, but we didn’t want anyone to feel they had no other choice but to leave our city,” she stated. This initiative reflects Atlanta’s commitment to balancing rapid economic development with the preservation of its long-term residents and their histories.
