A deeply concerning incident has surfaced in Indiana, where a Black woman reportedly in active labor was allegedly turned away from a hospital, only to give birth minutes later in her car. This event has ignited outrage on social media and is being cited as another tragic example of the ongoing Black maternal health crisis.
Denied Entry, Delivered on the Highway
Mercedes Wells and her newborn are now recovering at a hospital in Munster, Indiana, following the distressing event at Franciscan Health Crown Point. A viral video, shared by her family, shows a nurse wheeling Wells out of the hospital despite clear signs she was in active labor. According to her family, the hospital staff claimed she was only three centimeters dilated and advised her to return later. Tragically, just eight minutes after leaving the facility, she gave birth in the family’s car on the highway.
Wells’ sister-in-law, Cherice Joy Thompson, recounted the harrowing experience. Visiting family in Indiana, Wells was not due for several more weeks. Thompson described the scene in the car: Wells’ husband was driving with one hand while trying to assist his wife with the other. “She said, ‘I’ve got to push.’ … He was driving with one hand, ripped her pants off with the other hand, looked down, and he said he could see the baby’s head. And he was like, ‘Oh my God, here’s the baby’s head,’” Thompson shared. The baby was caught with a blanket and placed on Wells’ chest, umbilical cord still attached, as they continued driving to the next hospital.
Calls for Investigation and Reform
The family contacted 911 during the delivery, and dispatchers guided them to the Munster hospital, where Wells and her baby received care. While grateful for the eventual assistance, the family remains deeply shaken and upset by their experience at Franciscan Health. Thompson shared that Wells felt “violated, unheard, and dismissed.”
Franciscan Health has stated that it has launched an investigation into the incident. The hospital is facing significant backlash on social media, with many pointing to this event as a stark illustration of the maternal health crisis that disproportionately affects Black women. Statistics show Black women are three times more likely to die in childbirth than white women in the U.S.
Highlighting Systemic Issues
Online reactions underscore the urgency for reform. Users expressed horror at the situation, with comments like, “A whole hospital sent her away while she was literally giving birth, this is exactly why maternal care in America needs serious reform,” and “From hospital rejection to a highway birth in 8 minutes… this is horrifying. Hospitals need accountability NOW.”
