Akon Fights Spousal Support in Divorce

It seems like R&B star Akon is facing some turbulence off-stage as well as on. Amidst ongoing divorce proceedings with his wife of 29 years, Tomeka Thaim, Akon has officially responded to her divorce petition, and he’s pushing back against her request for spousal support.

Denying Spousal Support Request

According to TMZ, Akon filed his response in L.A. Superior Court on November 14th. In his filing, the “Locked Up” singer is asking the court to deny Thaim’s request for spousal support. This comes after Thaim herself stated in her initial filing back in September that the court should also deny any spousal support requests from Akon.

The couple shares a 17-year-old child. While Akon is seeking joint physical custody, Thaim has requested joint legal custody but is asking for full physical custody. This custody arrangement is clearly a significant point of discussion in their divorce.

Recent Challenges for the Artist

This legal battle comes after a series of recent challenges for the St. Louis-born entertainer. Earlier in November, Akon was arrested in Georgia for failing to appear in court in January 2023 due to a suspended driver’s license. He was released after posting bail the same day.

Further complicating matters, reports surfaced that Akon’s ambitious “Akon City” project in Senegal, which had been in development for seven years, has reportedly been scrapped. The Senegalese tourism agency decided to use the land for a luxury resort instead, marking a setback for the singer’s large-scale development plans.

Navigating Personal and Professional Hurdles

Akon’s legal team is now focused on navigating these divorce proceedings, aiming to resolve the financial and custody aspects of the separation. It’s a complex situation, highlighting the challenges that can arise even for global superstars when personal lives intersect with legal matters.
