Oklahoma Governor Commutes Death Sentence

In a significant last-minute decision, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has commuted the death sentence of Tremane Wood, who was scheduled for lethal injection on November 13th. This rare act of clemency came after a state panel recommended sparing Wood’s life, just a week prior to his scheduled execution.

A Rare Clemency Decision

Governor Stitt announced his decision to commute Wood’s sentence to life without parole, stating, “After a thorough review of the facts and prayerful consideration, I have chosen to accept the Pardon and Parole Board’s recommendation.” This marks only the second time in nearly seven years that Stitt, who is ineligible for reelection in 2026, has granted clemency.

The governor emphasized that this decision ensures a severe punishment for a violent offender, keeping him off the streets permanently. He noted that the commutation reflects the same punishment Wood’s brother received for the murder of a young man.

Wood’s Case and Denials

Wood, 46, was sentenced to death for his alleged involvement in the stabbing of 19-year-old migrant farmworker Ronnie Wipf during a botched robbery in 2002. However, Wood has consistently denied committing the murder, telling the board via video link, “I’m not a monster. I’m not a killer. I never was, and I never have been.”

Following the commutation, Wood was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine check. Prison officials attributed the medical event to dehydration and stress. Wood, who acknowledged he hadn’t eaten prior to his scheduled execution, stated he did not attempt self-harm and expressed his gratitude to the governor for the clemency.

A Second Chance

The Pardon and Parole Board’s recommendation for clemency was an uncommon step, making Governor Stitt’s acceptance of it a significant development. This decision means Tremane Wood will spend the rest of his life incarcerated but avoids execution.
