Epstein Emails Show Enduring Ties Post-Conviction

Even after pleading guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor, Jeffrey Epstein maintained a vast network of wealthy and influential friends. Thousands of emails, recently released by the House Oversight Committee, offer a startling look into these relationships, showing how little his conviction seemed to impact the desire of these powerful individuals to stay connected to the financier.

A Decade of Influence Revealed

These newly public documents span from around 2009, shortly after Epstein completed his Florida sentence, up until his arrest on federal sex trafficking charges in 2019. The emails reveal an eclectic global network that crossed political affiliations, including figures like liberal academic Noam Chomsky and Steve Bannon, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump.

Support, Advice, and Strategy

The correspondence shows a range of interactions. Some contacts reached out to offer support during lawsuits and prosecutions, while others sought Epstein’s advice on everything from dating to oil prices. In one instance, an individual even consulted him on how to respond to sexual harassment allegations.

Political Connections Across the Spectrum

Epstein maintained communication with political figures from various sides of the aisle. In 2018 emails, he advised Steve Bannon on his European political tour, responding enthusiastically to a news clip about Bannon’s perceived danger. Epstein even mentioned speaking with ‘one of the country leaders’ and proposed developing a strategy plan, suggesting a continued involvement in political maneuvering.

Interestingly, just months prior, Epstein was also emailing Kathryn Ruemmler, former White House counsel under President Barack Obama, expressing disdain for Donald Trump. Ruemmler described Trump as ‘so gross,’ to which Epstein replied, ‘worse in real life and upclose.’ These exchanges highlight the complex and often contradictory nature of his political network.

Circles of Wealth and Influence

Beyond politics, Epstein was deeply embedded in circles of global wealth. He frequently corresponded with high-profile individuals like Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel, brokering introductions and discussing international affairs. Emails show Epstein inviting Thiel to visit him in the Caribbean and complimenting Steve Bannon to Emirati businessman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

The emails also reveal interactions with figures like biotech venture capitalist Boris Nikolic, who attended the World Economic Forum in Davos. Nikolic mentioned meeting ‘your friend’ Bill Clinton, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Prince Andrew, while also engaging in flirtatious banter about relationships, underscoring the casual yet connected nature of these elite gatherings.

Academic and Professional Ties

Epstein also maintained contact with academics, including theoretical physicist Laurence Krauss. In one exchange, Krauss sought Epstein’s advice on responding to sexual harassment allegations, asking if he should even reply to a reporter. Epstein, after inquiring about the nature of the interaction, advised against responding.

He also corresponded with linguist and social scientist Noam Chomsky, offering the use of his New York apartment and joking about sending a plane for a ‘lefty friend’ needing medical attention. Furthermore, emails show a friendly rapport with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, bantering about the 2016 presidential race and Trump. Summers later expressed ‘great regrets’ about his association with Epstein, calling it a ‘major error of judgement.’

While these emails do not implicate Epstein’s contacts in his alleged crimes, they undeniably paint a vivid picture of his enduring influence and the extensive reach of his connections during the years he was a registered sex offender. The documents serve as a stark reminder of how deeply intertwined power, wealth, and influence can become.
