Major League Baseball is reeling from shocking allegations as two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, have been hit with federal charges. The accusations involve a sophisticated sports betting scheme where the pitchers allegedly accepted bribes to manipulate pitch outcomes, directly impacting game results for gamblers.
The Alleged Bribery Scheme
Authorities claim that from 2023 to 2025, Clase and Ortiz conspired with bettors to rig specific pitch outcomes. Clase, in particular, is accused of providing real-time information about his pitch choices to bettors, enabling them to place successful “prop” and “parlay” bets. One such bet, reportedly on a fast pitch against the Mets, alone yielded $27,000.
The indictment details that Clase allegedly communicated with bettors during games, agreeing to throw specific pitches in exchange for cash disguised as payments for “home repairs.” Ortiz reportedly joined the scheme in 2025, receiving payments for intentionally throwing balls in two separate games.
Financial Gains and Laundering
Investigators estimate that over $400,000 in gambling profits were directly linked to the pitches allegedly manipulated by Clase. The scheme reportedly involved funneling money through the Dominican Republic, suggesting an effort to launder the illicit funds. This level of alleged coordination points to a serious breach of trust within the sport.
Ortiz was apprehended at Boston Logan Airport on Sunday and is slated for a court appearance. Clase, however, remains outside of U.S. custody at this time. The FBI emphasized that this scheme has “sullied the reputation of America’s pastime.”

U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. condemned the players’ actions as a betrayal of the sport, highlighting the fraud committed against the Guardians and MLB. If convicted, both Clase and Ortiz face a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. This investigation is part of a broader crackdown on illegal gambling within professional sports, which has already seen arrests in other major leagues like the NBA.
