In a tragic incident that underscores the perils of distracted driving, a woman in Zion, Illinois, is accused of fatally striking a pedestrian while reportedly filming a TikTok livestream. The harrowing event unfolded on November 3rd, leaving a community shaken and raising urgent questions about smartphone use behind the wheel.
A Livestream Turned Tragedy
Authorities are investigating a 43-year-old woman, known on TikTok as “Tea Tyme,” who was allegedly livestreaming as her vehicle collided with a pedestrian. Reports indicate that the video captured the moment a sudden thud was heard, followed by the driver’s panicked reaction: “F-ck, f-ck, f-ck… I just hit somebody.”
The livestream was abruptly cut off shortly after the incident, with a child’s voice also heard in the background asking what had happened. First responders arrived at the scene and confirmed it was a pedestrian crash. The woman remained at the location to cooperate with police.
Investigation and Contributing Factors
According to Lt. Paul Kehrli of the Zion Police Department, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash. This points heavily towards distracted driving, specifically the use of a mobile device, as the primary cause of the fatal collision. The investigation is ongoing as authorities piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.
Online discussions, including a Reddit thread sparked by TikTok users, suggest the driver may have been engrossed in reading comments and interacting with her phone, diverting her attention from the road. This behavior is a stark reminder of the warnings issued by the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Devastating Impact
The victim, identified as 59-year-old Darren Lucas, was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries. A coroner confirmed that his death was due to blunt-force trauma sustained in the crash. The NHTSA reported that 3,275 people died in crashes caused by distracted driving in 2023 alone, highlighting the critical need for awareness.
We … will continue to pray for what the driver must be going through. We are trying to find our ways to live, without someone we cherished so much. — Chris King, Darren Lucas’ son-in-law
Lucas’ family has shown remarkable grace, expressing prayers for the driver’s emotional well-being while grappling with their profound loss. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise when attention is taken away from the critical task of driving.
