The latest season of The Real Housewives of Potomac is already serving up plenty of drama, and newcomer Angel Massie is at the center of some of it. Angel recently sat down with BOSSIP to clear the air about her headline-making clash with OG Gizelle Bryant over alleged ‘catfish’ comments and to discuss the lingering tension with Dr. Wendy Osefo.
Setting the Record Straight on ‘Catfish’ Comments
Angel clarified the situation surrounding a photo that Gizelle questioned on the show, suggesting it might have been altered. Angel explained that the image in question was a professional photo taken during her daughter’s first birthday celebration. She admitted to using ‘a little razzle-dazzle’ to brighten the photo, as many people do on social media, but emphasized that the wrong photo was presented on television.
She expressed disappointment, stating, ‘The photo that they were talking about at the table was actually a photo that our family photographer took.’ Angel felt betrayed by Gizelle, especially since she had hoped for a ‘big sister’ bond with the veteran housewife. ‘Because she did not treat me that way up until this point in front of my face,’ Angel told BOSSIP. ‘I just felt like perhaps this could be a bond and I could appreciate her for more than what people tend to say about her.’
Feeling Body-Shamed and Emotional
The ‘catfish’ comments hit Angel particularly hard because she was navigating the postpartum period and adjusting to new motherhood. She admitted to feeling ‘body shamed’ by the remarks, noting that her Instagram shows her weight fluctuating over time, representing the real experiences of many women. ‘I’m every woman. Every woman goes through changes with her weight, and I am just representative of what every woman experiences,’ she shared.
The conversation with Gizelle the following morning was especially emotional for Angel, leading her to tears. She explained, ‘I had just finished pumping. I had just finished FaceTiming my daughter… I was in my feelings because I missed my kids. It wasn’t that I was sad or insecure or ashamed. I was really disappointed because I wanted our relationship to go in a different direction.’
Tension with Dr. Wendy Osefo
Angel’s dynamic with Dr. Wendy Osefo has also been a source of friction. Despite being fellow Temple University graduates, their relationship has seen ups and downs. Angel expressed a simple ‘I wish her the best,’ alluding to Wendy’s recent legal issues, before diving into their on-camera conflicts.
A key moment of contention occurred at a Preakness party when Wendy interjected during a reconciliation between Angel and her friend K. Angel took offense to Wendy questioning her ‘energy’ and implying she was being ‘fake.’ ‘For her to say that she’s concerned because I didn’t keep the same energy, I just didn’t feel like it was her place to step into it,’ Angel stated. ‘Don’t try to call me fake, which is essentially what she tried to call me.’
Angel found Wendy’s resistance to seeing two Black women reconcile particularly concerning. She recalled that they had seemingly made amends at the Preakness event, only for Wendy to speak negatively about her later, which Angel learned about through the show’s airing. This inconsistency has left Angel confused about the true nature of their relationship.
She was keen to clarify that her issues with Wendy are separate from any past conflicts her friend K might have had with the professor. Angel insisted she approached Wendy with an open heart, even driving two hours to her house, and encouraged K to resolve their issues. She believes Wendy may have entered their interactions with preconceived notions.
Rejecting the ‘Eeyore’ Narrative
Despite social media portrayals suggesting she’s too soft or overly focused on her marriage, Angel rejects the idea that she’s timid. ‘I’m not this Eeyore type of person,’ she asserted. ‘I like to have fun. I just would love for the narrative that I’m someone who is miserable to go away because my life is great.’ She reminds viewers that she had only known the cast for less than a month when filming began, and the show captures just a ‘snippet’ of her experience.
