Max B is Free! Rapper Celebrates Release After 16 Years

Get ready, because the “Wave” is officially back! Harlem’s own Max B, the rapper behind the iconic “Wavy Crockett,” has been released from prison after serving 16 long years. The internet is buzzing with excitement, and his first moments of freedom were captured by none other than fellow artist French Montana.

A Celebratory Welcome Home

French Montana shared a video on Instagram showing Max B walking out of the New Jersey correctional facility. His caption was full of joy, exclaiming, “MY BROTHER REALLY CAME HOME ON MY B DAY ! HAMDULILLAH WALKED IT DOWN ! NO MORE FREE YOU.” The post, complete with the wave emoji, celebrated the return of Max B’s signature “wavy” style that has influenced so many.

This release marks the end of a significant chapter for the rapper, whose real name is Charley Wingate. He was originally sentenced in 2009 to 75 years for his alleged involvement in a robbery that tragically resulted in a death.

The Wavy Journey Through Sentencing

Max B’s sentence saw several adjustments over the years. In 2016, he took a plea deal for aggravated manslaughter, which reduced his sentence to 20 years. By 2019, it was further shortened to 12 years, bringing the possibility of freedom closer.

Fans eagerly anticipated his release, especially after Max B himself called into the Joe Budden Podcast earlier this year, excitedly announcing, “We got a date! I’ve got November 9, 2025, baby!” He even posted a document confirming his parole on Instagram in September, captioning it, “The Wave touches down November 9. The countdown begins.”

Looking Ahead: New Music and Adjusting to Life

What’s next for the newly freed rapper? Max B has big plans! In an interview with Okayplayer, he revealed his excitement about collaborating with the new generation of New York artists like Cash Cobain and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. He’s also preparing for the challenge of readjusting to life outside after such a long time away.

Max B admitted to feeling some anxiety about the changes, noting, “When I left, it was technology. Now, I know it’s just more accessible.” However, he remains optimistic, seeing “a world of opportunity” and feeling ready to embrace it. He’s looking forward to reconnecting with his family, stating, “I feel good. I get a chance to be with the kids, be with the wife.”

A Familiar Path

It’s worth noting that this isn’t Max B’s first time navigating the justice system. Before this lengthy sentence, he had spent eight years in prison for a previous robbery conviction, only having been a free man for about four years before his most recent incarceration.

Despite the challenges, Max B’s spirit seems unbroken. He’s ready to hit the ground running, embracing the “organic vibe” of his newfound freedom. The music world is certainly ready to welcome back one of its most distinctive voices.
