Jamal Anderson, a former running back for the Atlanta Falcons, has been arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence in Los Angeles. The incident reportedly occurred on November 5th, leading to the 53-year-old former NFL star’s detainment.
Details of the Arrest
According to NBC Los Angeles, police responded to a call at Anderson’s San Fernando Valley home around 11 a.m. Officers allege that Anderson was involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical confrontation, during which he allegedly strangled the victim. Paramedics were called to the scene, but the victim reportedly declined medical treatment.
Anderson was subsequently taken into custody. Los Angeles County jail records indicate he was released after posting a $50,000 bond. While initial reports lacked information on upcoming court dates, The New York Post has indicated a scheduled court appearance for December 3rd at 8:30 a.m.
Anderson’s NFL Career and Past Legal Issues
Jamal Anderson played his entire NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons after being selected in the seventh round of the 1994 draft. He retired in 2001 following a knee injury. Born in Woodland Hills, California, Anderson played high school football locally before attending Moorpark College and the University of Utah. His most notable season was in 1998, where he achieved 1,846 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, earning him a Pro Bowl selection despite the Falcons’ Super Bowl loss that year.
Sadly, this is not Anderson’s first encounter with the law. WSB-TV reports several arrests in Georgia since his retirement from the NFL. These include a 2009 arrest for suspected cocaine possession, an alleged indecent exposure incident in 2016 (where charges were not pressed), and a 2018 arrest following a dispute over a $50 limo fare. He has also faced multiple Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charges in various Georgia counties.
