Winter Travel: Americans Favor Hidden Gems

Planning your winter getaway for 2025/2026? It looks like the days of flocking to the same old crowded resorts and bustling city centers might be fading. A new trend is emerging, with Americans increasingly looking for unique experiences in lesser-known domestic destinations. Think cozy towns and scenic rural settings over the typical tourist traps!

Families Leading the Charge

According to Airbnb’s latest winter travel report, families are the driving force behind this shift. A whopping 80% of families are choosing to spend their winter vacations in suburban or rural areas instead of major cities. This suggests a desire for more relaxed, authentic experiences away from the hustle and bustle.

What’s more, these families aren’t just popping in for a quick weekend. Nearly a third of family travelers are planning stays of seven nights or longer. This indicates a growing preference for immersive trips where they can truly settle in and explore their chosen destination at a leisurely pace. The demand for larger accommodations, like homes with four or more bedrooms, further supports this trend towards longer, family-focused stays.

Trending Destinations: Snow and Sun

So, where are these travelers heading? The trending destinations offer a delightful mix of snowy wonderlands and warm-weather retreats. For those dreaming of a winter wonderland, Champion, Pennsylvania, is topping the list, promising snowy sports and a “cozy mountain vibe.” Other cold-weather favorites include Dover, Vermont; Campton, New Hampshire; Brighton, Utah; and McCall, Idaho.

On the flip side, if you’re chasing the sun, destinations like St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana; Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; Anna Maria Island, Florida; and Hermosa Beach, California, are seeing a surge in interest. These spots offer a chance to escape the cold and enjoy a different kind of seasonal charm.

Why the Shift to Under-the-Radar Spots?

This move towards smaller towns and less-trafficked areas likely stems from a desire for more authentic experiences, greater privacy, and perhaps even better value. These emerging destinations often provide a unique local flavor that larger tourist hubs can’t always match. Plus, with families opting for longer stays, these places offer the perfect setting to create lasting memories.

It’s clear that the landscape of winter travel is evolving. Travelers are seeking out destinations that offer something a little different, prioritizing experiences over crowded attractions. This trend highlights a growing appreciation for the charm and character of America’s hidden gems.
