A tragic incident unfolded in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday when a UPS cargo plane crashed just minutes after taking off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The devastating event resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, with authorities confirming more fatalities are expected.
A Fiery Scene Near the Airport
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter, operating as Flight 2976 and en route to Honolulu, Hawaii, went down around 5:15 p.m. local time. According to reports, the aircraft only gained minimal altitude before crashing approximately three miles south of the runway. Eyewitness videos captured the horrifying moments as flames erupted from the left wing, and the plane struggled before descending in a massive explosion.
The crash occurred in an industrial area, striking two nearby businesses – a petroleum-recycling facility and an auto-parts operation. The aircraft was reportedly carrying a significant amount of jet fuel, approximately 38,000 gallons, which fueled the intense blaze that followed the impact.
Shelter-In-Place Order Issued
In response to the immediate danger posed by the explosion and debris, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents within a five-mile radius of the airport. This order was later narrowed to a one-mile radius as the situation was reassessed. The Louisville Metro Police Department urged the public to avoid the area due to the ongoing emergency response.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are on the scene to determine the cause of the crash. Rescue, cleanup, and containment efforts are currently underway as the community grapples with this profound tragedy.
