New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is firing back at criticism from hip-hop mogul 50 Cent regarding his proposed tax policies. Mamdani appeared on MSNBC’s ‘The Beat’ to address the rapper’s viral concerns, reaffirming his commitment to using tax revenue to improve the city.
Addressing 50 Cent’s Concerns
Mamdani acknowledged 50 Cent’s criticism, even joking about seeing the rapper’s specific salary offer on Instagram. He reiterated his plan to implement a two percent tax increase on New Yorkers earning over one million dollars annually. Mamdani believes this measure is crucial for funding an economic agenda that would benefit all residents.
“I continue to think that having the top one percent of New York City, who are making more than one million dollars a year, having them pay two percent more for an economic agenda that would transform every New Yorker’s life, including their own, is something that is worthwhile,” Mamdani stated.
Focus on Public Excellence
Mamdani emphasized that the proposed tax increase is about ensuring the city delivers “public excellence.” He pointed to current issues like underfunded agencies and cutbacks in basic services such as libraries and trash collection, arguing that these affect everyone. His goal is to prove that every dollar raised will be spent wisely to improve the lives of all New Yorkers.
Even with the public disagreement, Mamdani added a touch of humor, joking that despite the “death threats,” he still listens to 50 Cent’s iconic track ‘Many Men.’ This suggests a willingness to engage with critics, even those with opposing views.
Mamdani’s Platform for NYC
Mamdani’s platform centers on making New York City affordable for all residents. His proposals include initiatives like free bus services, universal childcare, city-owned grocery stores, and a rent freeze on stabilized apartments. He is currently running against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa in the mayoral race.
