It seems like rapper 50 Cent isn’t holding back his thoughts on New York politician Zohran Mamdani’s economic proposals. Despite Mamdani admitting he still listens to 50 Cent’s music, the hip-hop mogul remains firmly against the politician’s tax plan, even doubling down on his criticism.
A Clash of Agendas
The public exchange began earlier this year when Mamdani appeared on The Breakfast Club to explain his economic agenda, which includes a proposal to increase taxes on New York’s wealthiest residents. 50 Cent quickly took to Instagram, not only expressing his disapproval but even jokingly offering to pay Mamdani to leave town.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, recently addressed 50 Cent’s criticism on MSNBC’s The Beat. He acknowledged the rapper’s reaction, recalling his surprise at the specific amount 50 Cent offered him. Mamdani stands by his plan, believing that a small tax increase on those earning over a million dollars annually could significantly benefit all New Yorkers by improving city services.
50 Cent’s Continued Disapproval
However, 50 Cent isn’t backing down. He shared a clip of Mamdani’s MSNBC appearance on Instagram, reiterating his concerns. While acknowledging Mamdani’s good intentions, 50 Cent fears that such tax policies could drive wealthy individuals and businesses out of the city.
He also voiced apprehension about potential police defunding, referencing a ‘purge’ scenario. This ongoing back-and-forth highlights the stark differences in their perspectives on economic policy and its impact on urban life.
Differing Views on Economic Policy
Mamdani’s core argument is that increased funding for city agencies, from libraries to sanitation, would improve the quality of life for everyone, including the wealthy. 50 Cent, on the other hand, seems more concerned with the potential economic exodus and the implications for public safety if police resources are reduced.
