Pras Michel Ordered to Pay $64M After Conviction

The legal troubles for Fugees founding member Pras Michel continue to mount. Following his conviction on multiple conspiracy-related charges, a federal judge has ordered the Grammy-winning rapper to pay nearly $65 million to the government. This substantial financial penalty adds another layer to his ongoing legal battles.

A Steep Financial Penalty

Federal Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that Pras had ‘obtained proceeds in the amount of at least $64,923,226 from his offense.’ These charges stem from his failure to register as an agent of China, conspiracy, and witness tampering. Michel was found guilty on 10 criminal counts in April 2023, including conspiracy and foreign lobbying charges.

Pras’s spokeswoman, Erica Dumas, expressed frustration over the mounting financial demands, telling Billboard, ‘They already took 100 [million] from him and now they want another 64 [million].’ This follows previous seizures of funds related to the case.

Health Concerns and Sentencing Delays

Michel’s legal situation has been further complicated by significant health issues. His sentencing, initially scheduled for September, was postponed after he underwent emergency surgery for colon cancer. Dumas confirmed that due to the surgery, Pras was unable to attend the scheduled hearing, expressing hope for his ‘swift healing and recovery.’

The rapper is now expected to be sentenced in December. While he faces up to 10 years in federal prison, his legal team is requesting a reduced sentence of three years, citing his medical condition and cooperation with authorities. Adding another controversial element, Pras’s lawyer, David Kenner, pleaded guilty to criminal contempt of court in 2024 for leaking confidential grand jury materials.

Background of the Case

The charges against Michel relate to his alleged role in facilitating political access for Malaysian financier Jho Low to former U.S. presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. He was also implicated in schemes to illegally fund aspects of their respective presidential campaigns. While reports suggested a potential pardon from Donald Trump in 2024, no such action materialized.
