Well, this is awkward. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is making headlines again, but not for the reasons he might have hoped. During a recent appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” Cuomo made some eyebrow-raising comments about diversity, only to follow them up with a rather significant gaffe involving the show’s hosts.
Cuomo’s Take on Diversity
While discussing issues affecting New Yorkers and his mayoral race against favorite Zorhan Mamdani, Cuomo was asked about hateful rhetoric. He denounced bigotry but then offered a surprising perspective: “Diversity is our strength, but it also can be a weakness,” he stated. He elaborated that constant effort is needed to maintain unity, citing potential flare-ups between different races and religions.
When host Eugene Daniels pressed him for clarification, Cuomo doubled down. “Diversity can be a weakness if you have antipathy among groups, Jonathan. If you have racism or anti-semitism, et cetera. Then you’ve have friction,” he explained. It seems Cuomo believes that while diversity is generally good, it requires significant work to prevent it from becoming a source of conflict.
The Host Mix-Up Gaffe
The interview took another turn when Cuomo made a notable slip-up. As Eugene Daniels interjected to correct him – “I’m Eugene” – Cuomo seemed to brush it off. The confusion resurfaced later when Cuomo, discussing his political dynasty versus Mamdani’s call for new leadership, addressed Jonathan Capehart but appeared to be looking at Daniels.
“It can be a scary city as you know, Jonathan, and you want someone in that seat who can handle whatever comes up,” Cuomo said, mistakenly calling Daniels by Capehart’s name. Both Daniels and Capehart couldn’t help but react with amusement, with Capehart pointing out that he was the one speaking to Cuomo at that moment. Cuomo offered a brief, “I’m sorry” before the interview concluded.
Political Context and Reactions
This interview comes at a critical time for Cuomo, who is vying for the New York City mayor position. Recent polls show Zorhan Mamdani holding a ten-point lead over Cuomo. Adding to the political drama, incumbent mayor Eric Adams dropped out and endorsed Cuomo, a move that prompted Mamdani to criticize both men for their past scandals and alleged ties to corruption.
Mamdani’s jab stated, “It’s no surprise to see two men who share an affinity for corruption and Trump capitulation align themselves at the behest of the billionaire class and the president himself.” The combination of Cuomo’s controversial diversity remarks and his repeated host mix-up has certainly fueled the ongoing narrative surrounding his campaign.
