Remember Roda Osman, the woman who went viral as the “Brick Lady” after claiming a man attacked her with a brick? Well, the story has taken a sharp turn. A jury has found Osman guilty of theft, concluding that her dramatic tale was a fabrication designed to scam kind-hearted donors.
The Verdict: Guilty of Fraud
After three days of testimony, a Harris County jury delivered a guilty verdict against Roda Osman, 35. Osman had initially claimed that an Uber driver attempted to kidnap her and then assaulted her with a brick when she refused his advances. This story quickly garnered sympathy online.
Following her alleged attack, Osman launched a GoFundMe campaign, successfully raising over $42,000 for supposed medical expenses. However, prosecutors presented evidence showing that the funds were not used for medical bills but were instead spent on personal trips to Jamaica, New York, and other items.
Sentencing and Social Media Ban
The judge sentenced Osman to 10 years of probation. She has been ordered to repay the full $42,302 she raised through the GoFundMe campaign. Additionally, Osman must enter a treatment facility for substance abuse.
In a notable restriction, the judge has prohibited Osman from using social media during her probation period. This measure aims to prevent further misuse of online platforms. The man initially accused by Osman, identified as Douglas, expressed relief that his name has been cleared, questioning where her initial supporters are now.
