A recent livestream featuring “Love Island” alum Huda Mustafa and her boyfriend Louis Russell has sparked significant controversy. The couple is facing backlash after they were seen laughing when a caller used a racial slur directed at their former castmate, Olandria Carthen. Following the incident, Huda has issued an apology, attempting to take accountability for her reaction.
An Inappropriate Reaction
The incident occurred during a livestream where a caller hurled the n-word at Olandria Carthen. Huda and Louis, who appeared together on season 3 of Netflix’s “Perfect Match,” were visibly amused by the comment. This reaction quickly drew criticism from viewers and fellow reality stars.
Initially, Huda posted a statement claiming they hadn’t fully heard what was said. However, after further backlash, she shared a more comprehensive apology on Wednesday, October 28. “I want to begin by saying I completely respect Olandria, and it’s extremely disheartening that anyone, especially a presumed child, would find it excusable to use this type of language,” Huda stated.
Taking Accountability and Encouraging Action
Huda directly addressed Olandria, apologizing for her immediate reaction. She explained that her laughter was a “nervous, uncomfortable reaction” stemming from being caught off guard, rather than finding the word or situation funny. “I want to be clear that I do not condone or tolerate anyone who uses such language,” she added, urging the responsible individual to reflect on their harmful words.
To demonstrate a genuine commitment to anti-racism, Huda announced she would be making a “personal donation to the NAACP” and encouraged others to do the same. This call to action echoes Olandria Carthen’s own statement, where she urged those involved to donate to organizations dedicated to uplifting the Black community, such as the UNCF and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
Reactions from Fellow Castmates
Olandria herself expressed deep disappointment, stating, “I do not condone racism of any kind, nor do I entertain it. That kind of language is never acceptable. Not in anger, not as a joke, not ever.” She emphasized that words carrying generations of pain should not be trivialized. Chelley Bissainthe, another star from “Love Island USA” season 7, also spoke out, urging everyone “not to make light of moments like these” and stressing the importance of accountability over silence or humor.
