Kevin Hart’s Worst Investment: Friends’ Ideas

Even global superstars like Kevin Hart face business ventures that don’t pan out. The comedian and entrepreneur recently opened up about what he considers his most challenging and costly investment: backing his friends’ business ideas.

The ‘Endless Pit of Bankruptcy’

During a 2022 appearance on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” Hart candidly described this specific type of investment as his “worst business investment.” He explained the delicate balance of wanting to support friends without letting their ideas lead to financial ruin.

“You never want your friends to feel like their ideas are not good ideas,” Hart told Corden, “but thus far, these ideas have been an endless pit of bankruptcy.” The pressure to be supportive can sometimes clash with sound financial judgment.

The Headphone-Speaker Fiasco

Hart pinpointed one particularly memorable venture: a friend’s company that developed headphones designed to open up and function as speakers. The concept aimed to let users share their music aloud, answering the question, “What are you listening to?”

While the idea had a creative spark, it ultimately failed to gain traction in the market. Hart described it as “the worst invention I’ve ever put money into,” a stark lesson in the unpredictable nature of startup investments, especially when personal relationships are involved.

Turning Lessons into Opportunities

Despite this setback, Hart has channeled these experiences into empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs. He’s actively involved in initiatives designed to provide funding and support to aspiring business owners, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Through programs like the AI Illumination Grant, a partnership with the Fifteen Percent Pledge and Heartbeat Ventures, Hart supports Black founders with funding and access to emerging technologies. His Coramino Fund, the investment arm of his tequila brand Gran Coramino, has also provided grants and AI training to over 100 small businesses.

With an estimated net worth of around $400 million as of September 2025, Kevin Hart continues to build his empire across comedy, film, and digital media through HartBeat Productions and Laugh Out Loud Network. His ongoing ventures, including sold-out stand-up tours and upcoming film projects, demonstrate his resilience and commitment to both entertainment and entrepreneurship.
