Judge Orders SNAP Benefits Must Continue

In a critical decision just 24 hours before planned cuts, a federal judge has ordered the Trump Administration to keep SNAP benefits flowing during the government shutdown. This ruling is a significant win for the 42 million Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for their food needs.

Judge Rules Against Halting Food Assistance

Judge Jack McConnell of Rhode Island issued an oral ruling on October 31st, directly challenging the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) intention to cut off food stamps. The Department of Justice had argued that SNAP no longer existed due to the lack of congressionally allocated funds during the shutdown, and that the use of a $6 billion contingency fund was at the administration’s discretion.

However, Judge McConnell found the suspension of SNAP benefits to be arbitrary and likely to cause “irreparable harm.” He acknowledged the widespread fear among Americans about meeting their families’ basic nutritional needs. “There is no doubt, and it is beyond argument, that irreparable harm will begin to occur — if it hasn’t already occurred — in the terror it has caused some people about the availability of funding for food for their family,” he stated during the emergency hearing.

A Lifeline for Millions

The court’s order mandates that the USDA must distribute the contingency money as soon as possible to ensure November payments are made. This ruling came alongside a temporary restraining order against a coalition of local governments, nonprofits, small businesses, and workers’ rights organizations who had filed a lawsuit against the administration.

The coalition celebrated the victory, calling it a “lifeline for millions of families, seniors, and veterans.” They emphasized that the ruling reaffirms a fundamental principle: “no administration can use hunger as a political weapon.” The coalition views this as a victory for core American values of fairness, compassion, and accountability.

Support from Other Federal Judges

Judge McConnell’s decision was not isolated. Minutes earlier, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston had also ruled the administration’s suspension attempt “unlawful” in a separate case. While Judge Talwani did not issue a temporary restraining order, she pushed for the Trump team to decide on potential reductions to November SNAP benefits by November 3rd.

  • Federal judge orders SNAP benefits must continue during government shutdown.
  • Ruling prevents cutoff of food assistance for 42 million Americans.
  • USDA must use $6 billion contingency fund for November payments.
  • Court cited “irreparable harm” and “terror” caused by potential benefit loss.
  • Decision seen as a major victory for food security advocates.

For now, SNAP benefits are secure, providing crucial relief to those most vulnerable during this period of government uncertainty. The message from the courts is clear: protecting access to food is paramount.
