Drama from Love Island USA is back in the headlines, this time involving Huda Mustafa and Olandria Carthen. Huda has issued a more comprehensive apology after initially facing backlash for laughing during a livestream when a caller directed the N-word at her former castmate, Olandria. The incident has sparked a conversation about accountability and the casual use of racial slurs.
From Livestream Laughter to Public Apology
The controversy erupted when Huda Mustafa and her boyfriend, Louis Russell, who also appeared on Netflix’s “Perfect Match,” reacted with laughter to a caller using the racial slur on a recent livestream. After an initial statement claiming they didn’t hear the comment clearly, Huda shared a more detailed apology the following day.
In her updated statement, Huda expressed her respect for Olandria and condemned the use of such language, especially by younger individuals. She clarified that her reaction was a “nervous, uncomfortable reaction” stemming from being caught off guard, rather than finding the word or situation humorous. Huda emphasized that she does not condone or tolerate racism and urged the individual responsible to reflect on their harmful words.
Taking Action and Encouraging Support
Beyond her apology, Huda announced she would be making a “personal donation to the NAACP” and encouraged her followers to do the same. This move aims to transform the negative incident into a positive, actionable step towards supporting anti-racism efforts.
Olandria Carthen had previously responded to the incident on her Instagram Stories, stating that she does not condone racism in any form and that such language carries generations of pain. She encouraged those involved and their followers to make donations to organizations dedicated to uplifting the Black community, such as the UNCF, NAACP, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
Fellow Castmate Speaks Out
Chelley Bissainthe, another star from Love Island USA season 7, also weighed in, expressing disappointment and urging people not to make light of such moments. She highlighted the pain caused by casual racism and the importance of accountability over silence or humor. Chelley emphasized that racism is never acceptable and should always be addressed immediately.
