The ongoing government shutdown is hitting federal workers hard, with many facing their first $0 paycheck despite continuing to work. In a heartwarming display of support, major U.S. airlines have stepped up to help combat food insecurity among these essential employees.
Airlines Offer Meals to Unpaid Workers
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and JetBlue have all confirmed they are implementing measures to provide food for federal workers. This initiative comes as the shutdown approaches its one-month mark, leaving many struggling to make ends meet.
United is offering food at seven of its mainland U.S. hubs, including major airports in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Delta is providing meals for transportation sector workers, while JetBlue is collaborating with agencies like the TSA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the FAA to offer support at their airports.
Ensuring Safety Amidst Financial Strain
American Airlines stated they are offering meals to federal employees who “continue to ensure safe travel for our customers — even as they go unpaid.” This highlights the critical roles these workers play, such as the approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers who are mandated to work without pay.
For many, the October 28th paycheck was the first they received that was completely $0, underscoring the urgent need for support during this challenging period.
Community Efforts Extend Beyond Airlines
The support doesn’t stop with the airlines. Airports and local nonprofits are also stepping up. Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas hosted a donation drive for essential items and gift cards. In the New York area, Feeding Westchester partnered with a local grocery store to provide food distribution at Westchester County Airport.
We know that during this federal shutdown, that our neighbors that are here working as federal employees… Many of them [are] working without pay under extremely difficult circumstances. Yet they continue to show up and do their job with professionalism and pride. And this community has their back. — Kenneth W. Jenkins, Westchester County Executive
These collective efforts demonstrate a strong community commitment to supporting those who keep the country running, even when they aren’t receiving their paychecks.
