Ruth Carter Launches Apparel Design Hub at Michigan HBCU

Get ready to be inspired! Legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter, the creative force behind the iconic looks in “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” is making waves again. This time, she’s teaming up with Michigan’s sole Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Pensole Lewis College (PLC Detroit), to launch an exciting new initiative: the Apparel Creation STU/DEO by adidas.

A Dream Realized for Aspiring Designers

This isn’t just another fashion program; it’s a groundbreaking partnership aimed at nurturing the next generation of design talent. Carter, herself a proud graduate of Hampton University, expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunity. She shared, “I’m grateful that my longstanding career has allowed my work to honor our history and culture while inspiring others to tell their own stories.”

The STU/DEO (pronounced ‘studio’) is designed to celebrate artistry, culture, and the empowerment of future designers. It’s a space where creativity can flourish, and students can learn to weave their own narratives through apparel. This initiative is particularly special because Pensole Lewis College was reestablished in 2021 by D’Wayne Edwards, founder of the Pensole Footwear Design Academy, after its initial closure.

Celebrating Culture and Innovation

The launch event was a vibrant affair, with the National Black Footwear Forum and the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America in attendance. It highlighted the innovative spirit of PLC alums Angel Buckens and Rodney Banks, whose work is featured in the STU/DEO. Their designs exemplify PLC Detroit’s core mission: to cultivate creative minds for years to come.

This collaboration marks the second time PLC has joined forces with Ruth E. Carter. D’Wayne Edwards noted the significance of the moment, stating, “It was truly special to share this moment with over 1,000 BFF attendees, alongside our talented students and dedicated faculty.” Their previous collaboration in 2023, the “Icons of Afrofuture” design challenge, showcased the incredible potential of young designers.

A Legacy of Storytelling Through Design

Ruth E. Carter’s impact on the film industry is undeniable. In 2023, she made history as the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category, securing her second Oscar for Best Costume Design for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This win solidified her status as the first to receive Oscars for both a feature film and its sequel, following her groundbreaking 2019 win for the original “Black Panther.”

Carter sees design as much more than just clothing; it’s a powerful medium for storytelling, cultural expression, and building a lasting legacy. “Moments like this remind us that design is more than fashion—it is storytelling, it is culture, it is legacy,” she remarked about the STU/DEO at PLC Detroit. She’s eager to mentor these bright young talents, anticipating how their unique visions will shape the future of design.
