Zohran Mamdani Defends Muslim Identity

In a powerful and emotional display, New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, has publicly pledged to fully embrace his Muslim identity. This comes in direct response to what he describes as ‘racist and baseless’ attacks from former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his allies during the ongoing mayoral race.

An Emotional Plea for Dignity

Standing with faith leaders outside a Bronx mosque, Mamdani spoke with deep emotion about the “indignities” that Muslim New Yorkers have long endured. He shared a poignant story about his aunt, who stopped riding the subway after the Sept. 11 attacks because she feared for her safety while wearing her religious head covering. He also recalled advice from an uncle early in his political career to keep his faith private.

‘These are lessons that so many Muslim New Yorkers have been taught,’ Mamdani stated, his voice thick with emotion. He noted that these same sentiments have recently been echoed by his political opponents, including Andrew Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa, and Mayor Eric Adams.

Accusations Fly in the Final Stretch

The attacks have escalated in recent days, particularly concerning Mamdani’s criticism of Israel’s government. Cuomo, appearing on a conservative radio show, seemed to laugh along with a host’s suggestion that Mamdani would ‘cheer’ another 9/11 attack. A Cuomo campaign social media account also posted, then removed, a video that depicted Mamdani in a negative light.

Mayor Eric Adams, standing alongside Cuomo, invoked fears of terrorist attacks, suggesting they might be more likely under a Mamdani administration. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has also falsely smeared Mamdani as a supporter of ‘global jihad.’ Cuomo, when questioned about the radio host’s comments, distanced himself, stating he didn’t take them seriously at the time but acknowledged they were offensive.

Mamdani’s Shift in Strategy

Mamdani explained that his remarks were not solely directed at his opponents but also at his fellow Muslim New Yorkers. He expressed the simple dream of every Muslim to be treated equally, stating, ‘And yet for too long we have been told to ask for less than that, and to be satisfied with whatever little we receive. No more.’

He revealed that he had initially tried to downplay his faith, believing that behaving well and staying focused on his core message would prevent him from being solely defined by it. However, he now realizes this approach was flawed. ‘I will not change who I am, how I eat, or the faith that I’m proud to call my own,’ Mamdani declared. ‘But there is one thing that I will change. I will no longer look for myself in the shadows. I will find myself in the light.’

Support and Skepticism

Despite facing skepticism from some within the Democratic establishment, particularly regarding his stance on Israel, Mamdani recently secured an endorsement from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Cuomo, however, continues to push back, accusing Mamdani of using a ‘dirty political trick’ to divide people and denying that New Yorkers are Islamophobic.
