LAX Terminal 5 Gets Major Olympic Makeover

Get ready for a whole new LAX experience! As the countdown to the 2028 Olympic Games intensifies, Los Angeles International Airport is rolling out a massive renovation project at Terminal 5. This isn’t just a facelift; it’s a significant upgrade aimed at transforming the travel hub into a world-class facility.

A Billion-Dollar Glow-Up for LAX

Starting Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Terminal 5 is undergoing a major overhaul. This project is a crucial part of LAX’s ambitious $30 billion Capital Improvement Program. The goal? To ensure the airport can comfortably and efficiently handle the massive influx of international visitors expected for the 2028 Olympics.

This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality. Officials are focused on creating a modernized travel experience that meets global standards. Think improved passenger flow, enhanced amenities, and a generally more pleasant journey through one of the world’s busiest airports.

Airline Shuffle and Operational Changes

To make way for the extensive construction, several airlines operating out of Terminal 5 have been temporarily relocated. This means some adjustments for travelers planning their trips.

  • JetBlue has moved to Terminal 1 as of Tuesday, October 21.
  • Spirit Airlines is now operating out of Terminal 2, starting Wednesday, October 22.
  • American Airlines will transition to Terminal 4 beginning October 28, 2025.

Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer at Los Angeles World Airports, emphasized the importance of this transition. “The closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience,” he stated, assuring that efforts are being made to minimize disruption for passengers.

What’s Inside the Renovation?

The Terminal 5 renovation is a comprehensive project involving the demolition and reconstruction of the existing structure. The estimated cost for this phase alone is a staggering $1.6 billion. But what will travelers actually gain from this investment?

Key improvements include the addition of two new gates, increasing capacity. Perhaps most significantly, a new post-security connection will link Terminals 4 and 5. This means you’ll be able to move between these terminals without having to go through security again – a huge win for seamless travel!

This connection will bypass the current narrow tunnels, offering a much smoother experience. Plus, the upgraded terminal will provide direct access to the new Automated People Mover currently under construction, further enhancing connectivity throughout the sprawling LAX complex.
