Music producer Timbaland, known for his groundbreaking work, is currently facing significant backlash on social media. The controversy surrounds his appearance in the music video for TaTa Taktumi, an artist he launched using artificial intelligence. This move has ignited a debate about the role of AI in music and its potential impact on Black culture.
The Debut of TaTa Taktumi and StageZero
Timbaland introduced TaTa Taktumi, his AI-generated artist, back in June, alongside his new company, StageZero. He described Taktumi as “I.P.” (intellectual property) and envisioned Stage Zero as a “Walt Disney in music,” aiming to blur the lines between human and artificial creativity. He claimed that while Taktumi is a unique concept, the video itself is largely human-made, with AI used sparingly.
However, when a clip of the music video was shared on X (formerly Twitter), fans were quick to voice their strong disapproval. One user expressed outrage, stating, “Using AI is crazy using AI to create a nonBlk artist to embody Black culture just so you can exploit without guilt is f*cking insane.” Another user lamented, “Timbaland destroying his own legacy wasn’t in my 2025 cards.”
Timbaland Defends His Use of AI
This isn’t the first time Timbaland has faced criticism regarding AI. He previously defended his use of the technology in music production. He clarified that he doesn’t “generate music like that” because the “human element” is still crucial. Instead, he sees AI as a tool to “add other elements” to his music, emphasizing that taste and knowledge of music theory are essential for effective use.
Timbaland believes that AI should be used as a collaborator, not a sole creator. “If you don’t know music — and you don’t know a quarter note, third note, a break, a bridge — you’re not going to get what you’re looking for, and your taste is key,” he explained. He argues that someone with “great taste” can differentiate between “AI slop” and genuinely innovative output.
