R. Kelly’s Chicago Mansion Sells for $1.6M

The notorious Chicago mansion once owned by convicted singer R. Kelly has finally found a new owner. The sprawling 21,000-square-foot estate, famously dubbed the “Chocolate Factory” by Kelly himself, sold for $1.6 million, a price significantly lower than its initial asking price of $3.5 million.

A Steep Discount for a Storied Property

The property, which housed a studio where Kelly recorded many of his songs, was purchased for less than half of its original asking price. The mansion’s history with the convicted singer undoubtedly added a layer of notoriety, though it also presented challenges in marketing the property.

The mansion was acquired in 2013 by the late Rudolph Isley of The Isley Brothers and his wife, Elaine, for $587,500. Reports indicate the property was in disrepair upon their purchase, with issues like floodwater in the basement, mold, and rot. The Isleys invested considerable funds into restoring the estate.

Challenges and Celebrity Lineage

Alex Wolking, the realtor who handled the sale, noted that high property taxes were the biggest challenge in selling the estate. The initial tax bill exceeded $250,000, based on an assessed value of nearly $4.7 million. However, an successful appeal reduced the assessed value to $2.6 million, making the property more attractive to buyers.

Wolking admitted that while the Isley Brothers’ connection to the property generated significant marketing attention, the R. Kelly association ultimately proved to be a key factor in attracting buyers, despite the lower sale price. He described the mansion as “one of the most storied and iconic homes in Chicagoland,” noting that properties with such celebrity lineage are rare in the Midwest.

R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence on racketeering and sex trafficking charges at a federal correctional facility in Butner, North Carolina.
