North Carolina State Representative Cecil Brockman, a six-term Democratic lawmaker from High Point, has been arrested and charged with serious sex-related offenses involving a 15-year-old minor. Court documents released on October 9th detail the felony charges that have led to widespread calls for his immediate resignation.
Serious Charges Against the Lawmaker
Brockman, 41, was taken into custody on October 8th and faces two counts of statutory sexual offense with a child and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor. A magistrate’s order alleges that Brockman engaged in sexual acts and committed “lewd and lascivious” behavior with the same juvenile around August 15th. The State Bureau of Investigation has joined the probe into these allegations.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Brockman is being held without bond. His initial court hearing, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, was postponed to Friday due to his hospitalization. While the Sheriff’s Office could not provide details about his medical condition due to privacy laws, they confirmed he remains in custody at the High Point jail.
Calls for Resignation and Concerns Over Influence
In response to the gravity of the charges, political leaders from both parties have demanded Brockman’s resignation. North Carolina Democratic Party officials, along with Republican House Speaker Destin Hall, Democratic House Leader Robert Reives, and Governor Josh Stein, have all called for him to step down. Governor Stein stated, “These charges are extremely serious and deeply troubling. While the legal process has yet to play out, it’s clear he cannot effectively serve his constituents and should resign immediately.”
Court documents also reveal concerns that Brockman’s political position and “abundant resources” could potentially aid him in evading prosecution. The magistrate further alleged that Brockman attempted to contact the victim, including trying to locate the teen at a hospital and using his status to gather information about her whereabouts. These allegations raise serious questions about the abuse of power.
Brockman’s Political Career and Recent Primary Win
Brockman, first elected in 2014, has occasionally crossed party lines to support Republican-backed legislation. He currently serves as one of four vice chairs on the House K–12 Education Committee. Notably, he narrowly won his most recent primary election, securing his representation for the 60th District, which encompasses parts of southwest Guilford County.
