From selling $5 CDs outside a mall to producing chart-topping hits for global superstars, Hit-Boy’s journey in the music industry is a testament to talent and perseverance. Now, the acclaimed producer is revealing a key moment that significantly impacted his career trajectory: Jay-Z’s intervention in freeing him from a restrictive, seemingly endless publishing deal.
Escaping the ‘No-End Date’ Deal
Hit-Boy, born Chauncey Hollis Jr., started his music career by sharing mixes on Myspace. At just 19, he landed a $50,000 co-publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group. However, he later discovered this deal had no expiration date, leaving him tied to unfavorable terms for years. Growing up without consistent paternal guidance and lacking knowledge of music contracts, this situation put him in a vulnerable position.
Despite these early challenges, Hit-Boy achieved massive success, producing for artists like Drake, Lil Wayne, Beyoncé, and Mariah Carey. His collaboration with Jay-Z on the iconic 2011 track “N-ggas in Paris” was a major turning point, significantly boosting his earning potential as a producer.
Jay-Z’s Crucial Support and Building a Foundation
In an interview with AFROTECH™, Hit-Boy credited Jay-Z not only with the success of “N-ggas in Paris” but also with actively helping him break free from that long-term publishing contract. This liberation, he explained, was instrumental in allowing him to build a stronger, more aligned business foundation for his career.
He emphasized the importance of having a team that shares his vision. “My lawyer, Jason Boyarsky, my manager Nima, just really having that same vision and just sharing the same passion behind my career and my music and the things I want to get accomplished,” he stated. This support system allowed him to move forward with greater clarity and purpose.
Embracing Technology: AI and Streaming
Beyond business strategy, Hit-Boy also shared his thoughts on the evolving role of technology in music production. He views Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a valuable tool, not a crutch, capable of acting as a “co-producer” to enhance creativity and maintain momentum during studio sessions. He expressed enthusiasm for AI’s potential to push artists further.
Hit-Boy is also embracing the streaming world, recently appearing on Twitch with artist N3on. He finds the real-time feedback from audiences invaluable, appreciating the “Ws” and fire emojis that signify immediate engagement. “I rock with the streaming world,” he affirmed.
Executive Producing N3on’s Upcoming Album
Currently under an EMPIRE record deal, N3on is preparing to release a 12-track album, executive produced by Hit-Boy. The project will be released in three parts and features collaborations with artists like Bebe Rexha, Big Sean, and Diplo. N3on expressed his excitement about working with Hit-Boy, calling him “one of the best at what he does” and anticipating a perfect match between his audience and the respected producer.
