The internet is abuzz with a passionate debate over who should embody the legendary comedian Richard Pryor in an upcoming biopic. After a screen test featuring Marlon Wayans recently leaked online, fans have been divided, with a significant portion arguing that Mike Epps is the superior choice for the role.
Wayans’ Screen Test Sparks Discussion
The leaked footage, shared by a screenwriter, shows Wayans performing a scene, with some fans praising his ability to capture Pryor’s distinct voice. Comments suggested that if you closed your eyes, Wayans sounded remarkably like the comedy icon. However, the visual aspect of Wayans’ performance led others to feel he couldn’t quite shed his own persona to fully become Pryor, drawing comparisons to Denzel Washington as Malcolm X or Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles.
The Case for Mike Epps
This mixed reception paved the way for the ‘Epps coalition’ to gain momentum. Many fans argued that Mike Epps, who has long been considered for the role, possesses a closer comedic sensibility and physical resemblance to Richard Pryor. One fan stated, “You can’t play Richard Pryor if you’re not as funny as Richard Pryor. Mike Epps not only looked like him back then but comedically was much closer to Richard Pryor than Marlon was.”
The sentiment was echoed by others who felt Wayans’ performance, while perhaps technically sound, didn’t capture the essence of Pryor. Some even humorously suggested Wayans was channeling his brother Damon Wayans playing a drunk dad, rather than embodying Pryor himself.
Clarifying the Biopic Situation
It’s important to note that the screen test footage of Marlon Wayans is from a different Richard Pryor biopic project that was in development back in 2010. This project faced casting issues and disputes, including one between Mike Epps and Pryor’s widow, and has been in limbo since 2014. Lee Daniels was attached to direct that film, with Eddie Murphy and Damon Wayans also reportedly involved at various stages.
Fortunately for fans eager to see Pryor’s life story told, Kenya Barris is currently developing a 10-episode series that will cover Pryor’s entire life. Barris expressed his deep passion for the project, calling Pryor his ‘comedy god’ and acknowledging his foundational influence on modern comedy, including that of Dave Chappelle.
While the debate over Wayans and Epps continues, it highlights the enduring legacy of Richard Pryor and the immense challenge of portraying such an iconic figure. For now, the focus shifts to Barris’s upcoming series, which promises a comprehensive look at the life of the comedy legend.
