Trump Reportedly Offers Adams White House Job to Exit NYC Mayoral Race

In a surprising political maneuver, reports from the New York Times suggest the Trump White House is exploring the possibility of offering current New York City Mayor Eric Adams a position within the administration. The alleged goal? To encourage Adams, a Democrat running as a third-party candidate for mayor, to drop out of the race and thereby bolster the chances of independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

A Strategic Play to Influence the NYC Mayoral Race

According to the Times, Trump advisors have discussed potential ambassadorships or other roles for Adams. Simultaneously, discussions are reportedly underway regarding a potential role for Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee for mayor. The overarching strategy appears to be clearing the field for Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani and is now running as an independent.

Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo share a long-standing relationship, stemming from their decades-long ties as New Yorkers. The two politicians reportedly spoke recently about the mayoral race, with Trump urging Cuomo to remain a candidate. Trump has openly expressed strong interest in the outcome of the NYC mayoral election, viewing the potential victory of Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, as detrimental to the city. He has publicly criticized Mamdani, labeling him a “communist.”

Concerns from the Business Community and Adams’ Response

Concerns about a potential Mayor Mamdani have also been voiced by New York City real estate executives and other influential figures in the business community. Mamdani’s platform centers on addressing poverty and housing insecurity, proposing tax increases on millionaires. When questioned about the possibility of accepting a job in the Trump administration, Adams described such a scenario as “hypothetical.”

Adams and Trump have developed a relationship since Trump’s re-election, including meetings before Trump’s January inauguration and discussions with Trump officials on issues like immigration. Notably, Trump’s Justice Department dropped federal corruption charges against Adams earlier this year. This has led critics and Democrats to accuse the NYC mayor of being compromised, suggesting a potential quid-pro-quo relationship, especially given Trump’s past characterization of Adams’ indictment as “phony” and “unfair.”

Mamdani Remains Confident

In response to the reports about Trump’s alleged efforts to help Cuomo by offering Adams a job, Mamdani expressed confidence to reporters. “It is not news that carries meaning because of any impact it will have on this race. We feel just as confident as we did yesterday that we will win this race in November,” he stated. Mamdani added that he hasn’t encountered any New Yorkers who want Donald Trump to influence the election’s outcome and expressed no concern about facing Andrew Cuomo one-on-one if Adams were to withdraw.
