Drake Reflects on ‘Degrassi’ in New Doc Trailer

Drake, who first rose to fame as Jimmy Brooks on the beloved Canadian teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” is revisiting his roots. A new trailer for the upcoming documentary “Degrassi: Whatever It Takes” features the global superstar reflecting on his experience with the show and its impact on his life.

From High School Struggles to TV Stardom

In the trailer, Drake candidly shares his personal struggles during high school, admitting, “I didn’t have a great time in high school. I just didn’t really fit in.” He credits landing the role on “Degrassi” with launching him on a “wild journey,” transforming his life from his teenage years into the global phenomenon he is today.

The documentary promises an in-depth look at the iconic series, featuring interviews with former cast members, fans, and the show’s creator, Linda Schuyler. Director Lisa Rideout highlighted “Degrassi’s” groundbreaking approach, stating, “Degrassi changed the landscape of television with real, unvarnished storytelling and did it unapologetically from a teenage perspective.”

Celebrating a Cultural Phenomenon

Executive producer Carrie Mudd emphasized “Degrassi’s” enduring legacy, calling it “more than a TV show—it’s a time capsule of growing up, full of heart, honesty and every ‘first’ experience you can think of.” She added that the series has captured the teenage experience in a “raw, authentic or unfiltered way” and is one of Canada’s most significant cultural exports.

“Degrassi: Whatever It Takes” is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13. The trailer’s release comes as Drake is currently on his “Some Special Shows 4 U” tour across Europe with PartyNextDoor, and he continues to hint at his upcoming studio album, “Iceman.”
