Louisiana is taking a stand against the popular online gaming platform Roblox, filing a lawsuit that alleges the site fosters an environment where child predators can easily operate. Attorney General Liz Murrill claims that Roblox has failed to implement adequate safety measures, putting the children of Louisiana at risk. The lawsuit asserts that the company prioritizes user growth and profits over the well-being of its young users.
Allegations of Inadequate Safety Protocols
The lawsuit highlights instances where predators have allegedly targeted minors on the platform. Murrill stated, “Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.” This isn’t the first time Roblox has faced such accusations; a similar lawsuit was filed in Iowa after a 13-year-old girl was reportedly groomed and trafficked across state lines after being contacted by an adult predator on the platform.
In Louisiana, local law enforcement has also reported cases linked to Roblox. Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard mentioned that his office has investigated incidents where individuals have allegedly used voice-altering technology to pose as children on the platform. Unfortunately, no arrests have been made in connection with these specific gaming site cases yet.
Roblox’s Response and Safety Measures
Roblox has firmly disputed the allegations, stating, “The assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is categorically untrue.” The company maintains that it has implemented rigorous safeguards, such as restrictions on sharing personal information and links, to protect its community. They acknowledge that bad actors attempt to circumvent these systems and continuously work to enhance their moderation practices.
While Roblox aims to prevent users from sharing personal details like phone numbers and doesn’t allow children under 13 to chat outside of games without parental consent, the lawsuit points out that age verification processes are not robust. The company is reportedly testing new features, including a video selfie verification for teenagers aged 13-17 to enable “trusted connections.” Additionally, Roblox has been rolling out an AI system to help detect potential child endangerment, which has led to over 1,200 reports of attempted child exploitation being submitted in the first half of 2025.
