Chaos unfolded at a Chicago Dollar General location when an employee reportedly locked customers inside the store during an active robbery. The incident, captured on video by customer Kizzie Davis, has gone viral on social media, raising serious concerns about customer safety and the actions taken by store employees during the alarming event.
An Ordeal Inside the Store
Davis was at the checkout counter when the store’s metal security gate suddenly came down. Shortly after, she reported that approximately three masked thieves rushed into the store. Davis and other customers quickly retreated to the back of the store to call the police. During the ordeal, one of the robbers brushed past them, telling them to “move out of the way.” However, upon returning to the front of the store, customers found themselves locked inside and unable to leave until the Chicago Police Department arrived.
The customers’ anxiety was palpable as they waited for police. Davis expressed her fear, stating, “It could’ve been a hostage situation. Somebody could’ve had a gun.” The decision to lock customers inside, especially with a robber still present, has drawn widespread criticism.
Customer Outrage and Safety Concerns
Social media users largely sided with the customers, questioning the value of merchandise inside the store that would warrant locking people in during a robbery. Comments like, “Aint nothing in there worth enough to keep me locked in there,” and “dollar general has money & they’re insured don’t die for someone who will replace you the next day,” highlight the public’s sentiment. Some users even suggested they would sue for potential PTSD, emphasizing the perceived recklessness of the employee’s actions.
While the police eventually arrived, and two men were arrested, Davis still feels Dollar General should be held accountable for jeopardizing customer safety. “It’s a slap in my face as a customer, like my safety was in jeopardy, and they didn’t care,” she stated, expressing a feeling of betrayal and disregard for her well-being.
Broader Context of Crime and Intervention
This incident occurs amidst Chicago’s ongoing struggle with crime, which has drawn the attention of President Donald Trump. Trump has spoken about sending National Guard troops to the city to combat crime, citing gun violence over the 2025 Labor Day weekend. He has also made claims about receiving pleas from “African-American ladies” in Chicago asking for his intervention, though these claims have been met with skepticism.
