  • 5 Ways to Elevate Your Vacation Sex

Dreaming of that perfect romantic getaway? While booking flights and planning excursions are key, don’t forget the most exciting part: vacation sex! Experts agree that being intentional about intimacy can transform a good trip into an unforgettable experience, strengthening your bond long after you return home.

A 2024 study even found that couples who shared adventurous and memorable travel experiences reported higher levels of happiness, connection, and passion. So, as Memorial Day weekend and summer approach, let’s dive into five ways to ensure your vacation sex life reaches new heights!

    1. Plan Ahead for Intimacy

Great sex doesn’t always have to be spontaneous; planning can enhance the experience. Consider booking adults-only resorts, private villas, or boutique hotels that offer more privacy. Choosing rooms away from high-traffic areas, upgrading to suites with special features like soaking tubs or balconies, and scheduling romantic dinners can all set the perfect mood.

    2. Pack for Pleasure

Don’t let packing stress overshadow intimacy. Bring your favorite toys, lubricants, protection, and massage oils to make intimacy effortless. Relationship guru Gigi Engle advises packing travel-sized essentials and romantic must-haves, like a relaxing bedding spray. Just remember airport liquid restrictions!

    3. Avoid Overscheduling Activities

While it’s tempting to pack every moment with activities, leaving room for downtime is crucial. Constant excursions and reservations can leave you too exhausted for intimacy. Psychotherapist Julia Simone Fogelson notes that being well-rested can increase energy for your partner. Sometimes, the most memorable moments happen when you simply relax together.

    4. Embrace Experimentation

Vacations are the perfect opportunity to step outside your comfort zone. A change of scenery can spark excitement and help you reconnect with your partner in new ways. Don’t be afraid to try playful games, embrace a carefree attitude, or even engage in a little “bad behavior,” as sex therapist Emily Jamea suggests. Sneaking into a hotel pool for a playful encounter can boost desire and intimacy.

    5. Just Relax and Be Present

Above all, relaxation is key. Feeling calm, rested, and emotionally present allows your nervous system to regulate, making it easier to relax, build arousal, and experience pleasure fully. Sex expert Emily Jamea points out that chronic stress suppresses sexual desire. On vacation, with work pressures lifted, your nervous system can shift from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest and digest’ – essential for maximizing sexual pleasure.

  • Black Women Find Strength in HIV Support Community

Imagine receiving a life-altering diagnosis that shakes your world to its core. For Kennedi Lowman, a thriving medical lab scientist, that moment came unexpectedly. A routine blood donation led to a voicemail from the American Red Cross, urging immediate contact. The news that followed—an HIV-positive diagnosis—could have been devastating, but for Kennedi, it became the catalyst for a powerful new purpose.

From Diagnosis to Destiny: Finding Purpose

At 29, Kennedi was living a fulfilling life when the diagnosis hit. Reflecting on the signs, she notes how HIV symptoms can mimic the flu, underscoring the critical importance of regular testing for sexually active individuals. Believing she contracted HIV around 2015, Kennedi initially grappled with fear and internalized stigma. “I thought no one would want to date me, that I couldn’t have kids, that I was damaged,” she shared, leading to a two-year period of depression where she confided only in her sisters.

However, Kennedi made a conscious decision to reclaim her narrative and her health. This pivotal choice transformed her personal struggle into a platform for service and sisterhood. On World AIDS Day in 2018, she bravely went public with her story, motivated by the lack of visible young Black women living with HIV sharing their experiences in Atlanta. “So I became that person,” she stated.

Founding LOTUS: A Sisterhood for Cisgender Women

Kennedi’s pain birthed a powerful purpose: the co-founding of LOTUS—Loving Ourselves Through Unity and Strength. This Atlanta-based national support network specifically serves cisgender women living with HIV. LOTUS emerged from a recognized gap in support, as Kennedi explained, “It’s like the world looks at everyone else living with HIV except for cisgender women.” The organization provides crucial emotional support, education, and empowerment to women who are often marginalized in HIV conversations.

Through LOTUS, Kennedi has fostered a vital community where women feel seen, heard, and uplifted. Whether it’s facilitating lengthy support group meetings or offering a comforting text to a newly diagnosed college student, Kennedi’s commitment is unwavering. “Support is everything,” she emphasized. “It can change someone’s life.”

Thriving as a Long-Term Survivor and Advocate

Kennedi proudly identifies as a long-term survivor, celebrating eight years since her diagnosis—a significant milestone compared to the grim prognosis of the 1980s. She finds inspiration in women who have been living with HIV for 15 or 20 years, reinforcing her belief in a long and fulfilling future. Her advocacy extends beyond LOTUS; she is also a member of the HIV Health Equity Task Force at Morehouse School of Medicine, contributing to national discussions on treatment access, stigma reduction, and care equity.

Empowering Black Women’s Health and Pleasure

One of Kennedi’s key missions is to dismantle the harmful myth that women living with HIV should abstain from sex. She advocates for serodiscordant relationships (where one partner is HIV-positive and the other is not) and encourages women to embrace their sexuality. “I’m not putting myself in a box. I know what I like, and I’m going to speak up about it,” she asserts. Her experience has taught her the importance of self-advocacy, setting boundaries, and unapologetically expressing needs.

Kennedi’s passion for empowerment is deeply rooted in her lived experiences, exemplified by the story of a woman she met who, initially unable to even say the word “HIV,” later earned her GED, bought a home, and began teaching healthy relationship workshops. “She built herself up,” Kennedi recalls with pride. Her advice to newly diagnosed women is clear: “Find your people. Get support. You don’t have to carry this alone.” For HIV-negative women, she urges them to “Use your voice. Stand firm in your truth. Get tested. And never forget—you deserve both pleasure and protection.”

Kennedi reminds everyone, regardless of HIV status, to prioritize their health and be honest with healthcare providers. Today, she is not just surviving but thriving, crediting her HIV diagnosis with helping her find her voice and become stronger. “Life is for the living,” she declares, “And I’m gonna live it.”
