  • Patti LaBelle on ‘Lady Marmalade’ Meaning

It’s hard to imagine a song as iconic as “Lady Marmalade” not having its meaning crystal clear from the start, but legendary singer Patti LaBelle says that was the case for her and her group, Labelle, back in 1974. She recently shared that the true meaning of the song only became apparent after it became a massive hit.

Unveiling the Meaning of ‘Lady Marmalade’

During a candid appearance on the “IRL Angie Martinez” podcast, LaBelle revealed that she and her group were unaware of the song’s subject matter – a prostitute in New Orleans – until after it was released and climbing the charts. “Well, she’s a hooker,” LaBelle explained, clarifying the famous French lyric “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?” translates to “Will you sleep with me tonight?”

“When we recorded this song, we had no clue what it was about until the song came out and was selling and doing really well,” she recalled. The song went on to become one of Labelle’s biggest hits, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.

    Backlash and Enduring Legacy

Despite its commercial success, the song’s risqué theme did generate criticism, particularly from religious audiences. LaBelle humorously recalled how nuns reacted to the song, to which she responded, “Well, they have to make a living, too. I can’t snatch the mattress from under them. They gotta do what they gotta do.”

The song gained even more popularity with a new generation when Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa, and Pink recorded a remake for the 2001 film “Moulin Rouge!” This cover also topped charts globally and earned a Grammy. LaBelle’s original version was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

    A Career Spanning Decades

LaBelle, now 82, continues to be celebrated for her incredible contributions to R&B and soul music over a career spanning more than six decades. “Lady Marmalade” remains one of her most recognizable and signature recordings, a true anthem of the 1970s.

  • 8 Black Women Thriving With Diabetes

World Diabetes Day, observed annually on November 14th, is a crucial reminder to raise awareness and share resources about this widespread condition. Did you know that in 2024, a significant 12.4% of African Americans were diagnosed with diabetes? Today, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible strength and resilience of Black women who are not only managing their diabetes but truly thriving.

Understanding Diabetes: Type 1 vs. Type 2

Before we celebrate these amazing women, let’s quickly touch on the basics. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, a hormone essential for regulating blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, occurs when the body produces insulin but doesn’t use it effectively, leading to insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar levels.

These eight remarkable women are living proof that a diabetes diagnosis is just one facet of a powerful and dynamic life. They demonstrate that with management, lifestyle changes, and a strong spirit, you can continue to achieve your dreams.

    1. Halle Berry, 59

The iconic Halle Berry was diagnosed with diabetes back in 1989 after a health scare that led to a week-long coma. While there have been varying reports, she has clarified in recent years that she manages type 2 diabetes. Berry’s journey shows that even after a serious diagnosis, a full and vibrant life is possible.

    2. Patti LaBelle, 81

Legendary singer Patti LaBelle also received her type 2 diabetes diagnosis after collapsing on stage in 1994. Despite having no prior symptoms, the diagnosis ran in her family. LaBelle has since taken control of her health through dedicated dietary changes and consistent medication management.

    3. Vanessa Williams, 62

Vanessa Williams lives with type 1 diabetes, a diagnosis she received as an adult, which is less common for this type. She has never let her condition define her, actively supporting diabetes charities and even headlining the StayWell Guam Diabetes Foundation gala in 2018.

    4. Tami Roman, 55

Actress Tami Roman has been candid about her battle with type 2 diabetes, which she was diagnosed with in 2013 after initially being diagnosed with pre-diabetes in 2008. Her journey highlights the complex relationship between managing diabetes, diet changes, and body image.

    5. Viola Davis, 60

With a strong family history of type 2 diabetes, Viola Davis was diagnosed with prediabetes around 2016. She proactively adopted a healthier diet and increased exercise to prevent the full onset of the disease, inspired by her sisters and a great aunt who passed away from it. Davis also lent her voice to raise awareness by narrating the documentary “A Touch of Sugar.”

    6. Sherri Shepherd, 58

Talk show host Sherri Shepherd has been managing type 2 diabetes since 2007. She’s embraced lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments, increased physical activity, and the use of glucose monitors. Recently, she’s also shared her positive experience with the GLP-1 drug Mounjaro for blood sugar regulation.

    7. Oprah Winfrey, 71

While recently discussing her use of GLP-1 medication for weight management, Oprah Winfrey has a long history of managing her health, including a pre-diabetes diagnosis. She shared six years ago that her mother also had type 2 diabetes. Oprah has since reported stable blood sugar and blood pressure levels, showcasing the power of proactive health management.

    8. Gabourey Sidibe, 42

Actress Gabourey Sidibe underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery in May 2016 after she and her brother were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Concerned about potential complications like limb amputation, she opted for the surgery to help manage her condition by reducing her food intake.

    Living Powerfully Beyond Diagnosis

These incredible women inspire us all by showing that a diabetes diagnosis doesn’t have to be a limitation. Their stories highlight the importance of awareness, proactive health management, and the power of resilience. They remind us that managing a health condition is just one part of a much larger, powerful, and thriving life.

  • Kevin McCall: Patti LaBelle ‘Can’t Sing’?

Well, it seems Kevin McCall is back in the spotlight, and he’s not holding anything back! After a period of relative quiet, the former R&B artist has been dropping some seriously controversial opinions, including some rather shocking takes on legendary singers. Get ready, because this might ruffle some feathers.

A Blasphemous Take on Music Icons

During a recent appearance on the Back On Figg podcast, McCall shared a “hot take” that has the internet buzzing – and not in a good way. When the discussion turned to vocalists, he boldly stated, “Patti [LaBelle] can’t sing.” Yes, you read that right. He’s questioning the vocal prowess of one of soul music’s most revered OGs.

But he didn’t stop there. McCall went on to list several other iconic artists, including Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Keith Sweat, and Alicia Keys, claiming they also “can’t sing.” He even went as far as to call Alicia Keys “pitch/tone deaf.” While he insisted he’s still a fan of these artists, it’s hard to imagine these comments sitting well with their legions of fans.

    McCall’s Top Vocalists

On the flip side, McCall did offer up his list of singers he believes have genuine talent. His top picks include T-Pain (noting he can sing without autotune), Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan, Monica, and B-Rocka. He even gave a nod to Mario, admitting, “he corny – but he can sing.”

    Blame Game with Chris Brown

Adding to the drama, McCall also revisited his ongoing issues with Chris Brown. On the same podcast, he tearfully confessed that he’s currently relying on EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) and partially blames his former collaborator for his financial struggles. He even called out Brown to share some of his “Breezy Bowl XX” earnings.

Chris Brown seemingly responded with a laugh and a cryptic Instagram Story post that read, “Remember this: you can’t walk across a burnt bridge. And you know what’s funnier than a troll? A BROKE ONE.” McCall later responded to Brown’s trolling in a rather cringey impromptu interview, singing lyrics from their past collaboration “Deuces.”

    • Keyshia Cole
    • Keith Sweat
    • Alicia Keys

These controversial statements about music legends and his public spat with Chris Brown have certainly put Kevin McCall back in the headlines. Whether you agree with his opinions or not, he’s definitely got people talking.
