The National Basketball Association (NBA) is stepping up its efforts to uncover potential wrongdoing within its ranks. The league has reportedly requested mobile phone records and other documents from several teams as part of a widening investigation into an illegal gambling business.
Investigation Intensifies After Arrests
This move comes nearly a month after the arrests of Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones. They are allegedly involved in a gambling scheme with ties to the mafia. The arrests prompted committees from the House and Senate to question the league about its oversight and how such credible evidence wasn’t uncovered sooner.
In response, NBA officials have confirmed they’ve hired an external law firm, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, to spearhead the investigation. The league has begun reaching out to teams, seeking access to cellphones and related records. The focus is on gathering information to understand the extent of any potential involvement.
Lakers Among Teams Contacted
The Los Angeles Lakers are among the teams that have been contacted. Damon Jones, a former shooting coach for LeBron James, had special access to the Lakers organization. League sources indicate that investigators have requested documents, including cellphones and phone records, from at least 10 Lakers employees. Notably, assistant trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims, both with connections to Jones, have reportedly complied and handed over their phones.
An NBA spokesman stated, “The NBA engaged an independent law firm to investigate the allegations in the indictment once it was made public. As is standard in these kinds of investigations, a number of different individuals and organizations were asked to preserve documents and records. Everyone has been fully cooperative.”
A Pattern of Gambling Concerns
This isn’t the first time the NBA has faced gambling-related issues. In April 2024, Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was expelled from the league following an investigation into alleged gambling schemes. Additionally, NBA player Malik Beasley is currently a target of a federal gambling investigation.
Interestingly, the league had previously cleared Terry Rozier of any wrongdoing before his arrest in October, highlighting the complex and evolving nature of these investigations.
