  • Gucci Mane & Keyshia Ka’oir on Managing Mental Health

While many know Gucci Mane as a trailblazing trap music pioneer, behind the scenes, Radric Delantic Davis has been navigating a significant mental health crisis. In his new memoir, ‘Episodes: The Diary of a Recovering Mad Man,’ the rapper bravely shares his experiences living with bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia, and the immense effort it takes to maintain stability.

    A Wife’s Unwavering Support

During a recent interview on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ Gucci Mane and his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, offered a candid look at how they’ve managed his mental health over the years. Ka’oir recalled witnessing his episodes before they were married, describing it as seeing a stranger. ‘It’s really sad because you’re seeing someone you don’t know. They’re saying things to you that are so disrespectful, so mean, and you have to be just like, ‘but I’m not talking to Gucci. Who is this person?’” she shared.

Despite the challenges, Ka’oir felt a deep commitment to stay by his side. She explained that she believed leaving him would have negatively impacted his well-being. When asked about the future of their marriage, she was resolute: ‘I’m going to fix him.’ She noted that during his rise to fame, no one around him seemed willing to address his mental health struggles, instead enabling his behavior with drugs and weed.

    Understanding the ‘Madness’

Gucci Mane described his episodes as a ‘warped world,’ almost like psychosis, where he would hear voices and experience a profound lack of empathy. He explained in his book that this ‘madness’ felt like an ‘evil side’ devoid of good, leading him to say incredibly mean things he would later be deeply embarrassed by. ‘I [didn’t] even think I know how to curse and say stuff like that. I be going so deep into the dungeon,’ he admitted.

These episodes were often fueled by anger and impulsivity. Gucci recalled giving away jewelry and money during manic states, with friends knowingly taking advantage of his condition. Upon his release from jail, he made the decision to cut ties with those old friends, realizing they had exploited his vulnerability.

A System of Control and Care

To manage these episodes and protect both her husband and his public image, Ka’oir implemented a strict system. She takes control of his social media, deleting apps like Instagram and Twitter, and changing passwords to prevent public knowledge of his episodes. ‘I just control everything at home,’ she stated.

Ka’oir explained that she has learned to recognize the early signs of an impending episode, such as changes in his communication patterns, withdrawal, lack of sleep, and even the way he texts. By catching these signs early, she has been able to prevent full-blown episodes. ‘And now, before the episodes come, I catch it. So that’s why he hasn’t had another one,’ she said.

    Fatherhood as a Stabilizer

Gucci Mane credits fatherhood with helping him maintain stability. Since the birth of their son, Ice, in 2020, and daughter, Iceland, in 2023, he has not experienced a major episode. The fear of not being present for his children motivates him to stay on track. ‘What scared me was, I cannot ever let my kids see me like that, and I can never not be on point to be needed to handle the business of raising the baby,’ he shared.

What are your thoughts on Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir’s openness about mental health management? Share your reflections in the comments below!

  • Adidas & Kicking It Drop ‘Live Music’ Gazelle

Adidas Originals has teamed up with Kicking It, an Austin-based sneaker boutique powered by Black creatives, to put a fresh spin on the iconic Gazelle silhouette. This unique collaboration, dubbed the “Live Music” Gazelle, pays homage to Austin’s reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World” and its rich cultural tapestry.

A Design Inspired by Austin’s Blues

Naja Dorsey, the creative director of Kicking It, spearheaded this first-of-its-kind project. The shoe’s design draws heavily from Austin’s blues heritage, featuring a suede upper in five distinct shades of blue. Accents of red on the tongue and yellow on the signature Three Stripes add a pop of color, mirroring the legendary entrance of Antone’s Nightclub, a historic venue where music icons once performed.

Dorsey aimed to capture Austin’s unique spirit, explaining, “I just wanted something to be funky, because Austin has that slogan, ‘Keep Austin weird.’ So, we kind of pride ourselves on that, too… Being weird, being yourself, being different, standing out.” She also highlighted how the music scene, despite historical segregation, has been a unifying force in the city.

    Craftsmanship and Meaningful Details

Dorsey was meticulous about the details, ensuring the shoe felt authentic. “My favorite design element would be the guitar strings on the side, being able to hold the shoe and actually feel like I’m playing a guitar,” she shared. She insisted on embroidered guitar strings and stitched leather for the guitar pick, prioritizing quality and tactile experience over simple printing.

    Giving Back to the Community

Beyond the aesthetics, this collaboration extends Kicking It’s commitment to community initiatives. A portion of the proceeds from the “Live Music” Gazelle will directly fund scholarships for students at Huston–Tillotson University, a local HBCU. These funds will support its jazz band and future music programming, reinforcing the connection between music, culture, and education.

The launch was celebrated with two events: an in-store gathering featuring customizations and a family-friendly concert at Antone’s Nightclub, headlined by J. Soulja and The Keezy Experience. The “Live Music” Gazelle retails for $120 and is available in limited quantities exclusively at Kicking It’s Austin store and online.

Dorsey expressed deep appreciation for Austin’s support, stating, “I feel loved, I feel special, and I just appreciate Austin for showing out for us.” This collaboration is a powerful example of how fashion, music, and community can come together to create something truly special.

What do you think of the Adidas x Kicking It “Live Music” Gazelle? Are you a fan of the design and its connection to Austin’s music scene? Let us know in the comments!

  • Fans Defend Brandy After Stage Exit

It’s never easy when an artist has to cut a show short, and fans are rallying around R&B superstar Brandy after she exited the stage mid-performance in Chicago. While some critics questioned the abrupt departure, Brandy herself clarified the situation, and her supporters are emphasizing that health should always come first.

    An Apology and an Explanation

The incident occurred during “The Boy Is Mine Tour,” a highly anticipated reunion with Monica. Midway through the Chicago show, Brandy reportedly told the audience she needed a moment before leaving the stage and did not return. The concert concluded without the duo performing their iconic hit, “The Boy Is Mine.”

The following day, the Grammy-winning singer, now 46, took to social media to apologize and explain. She revealed that after weeks of intense rehearsals, she experienced severe dehydration and felt like she was going to faint. Brandy stated that everyone involved agreed that prioritizing her well-being was the most crucial step.

    Fans Show Support Amidst Criticism

Despite Brandy’s explanation, the internet buzzed with mixed reactions. However, many fans quickly jumped to her defense, highlighting the seriousness of dehydration and the importance of artist health. “We’ve seen too many artists pass out and die on stage because they ignored their health,” one user commented on Threads, saluting Brandy for prioritizing her well-being.

Even before Brandy released her official statement, support was building. On X, Wynton Mohorn posted, “If Brandy left the stage & didn’t return, something serious must have happened. Brandy wouldn’t do that for just any reason. I just hope that Brandy is ok.” Others took to explaining that dehydration is far more serious than simply feeling thirsty, noting it can lead to dizziness, confusion, and fatigue.

    Understanding Dehydration’s Impact

As one user pointed out, dehydration isn’t just about thirst; it’s a critical state where the body struggles to function properly. The Mayo Clinic explains that dehydration occurs when fluid loss exceeds intake, potentially causing symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and fainting, especially during strenuous activity or in hot conditions. Performing on stage, singing, and wearing costumes can put immense strain on a body, making temperature regulation a significant challenge.

Thankfully, Brandy recovered quickly enough to perform her full set in Indianapolis the very next evening. Fans are encouraged that both Brandy and Monica have a few days to rest before their next show, allowing them to recuperate and continue the tour strong.

What are your thoughts on fans defending Brandy? Do you think health should always take precedence over a performance? Let us know in the comments!

  • Black Women Reclaim Ancestral Spirituality

For many Black women, growing up meant navigating faith traditions that often painted anything spiritual, natural, or connected to the ‘unknown’ as dangerous or demonic. Pop culture reinforced this, casting Black characters who embraced spirit or magic as villains. But a powerful shift is underway: Black women are beginning to reclaim ancestral spirituality, finding new power in practices once deemed forbidden.

    Challenging Stereotypes and Fear

The fear surrounding ancestral practices often stems from rigid religious upbringings and negative portrayals in media. Even positive affirmations of spiritual gifts or connections to Yoruba priests (like Michael B. Jordan’s middle name origin) or Beyoncé’s nods to Hoodoo in “Lemonade” have been met with accusations of being ‘demonic.’ This cultural conditioning creates fear, even as curiosity about these ancestral roots grows.

However, recent cultural moments are cracking open the door to more nuanced conversations. Films like “Sinners” have moved beyond simplistic horror tropes, portraying Hoodoo practitioners positively. This shift is crucial, but it’s guided by cultural workers and diviners who live these traditions.

The Wisdom of Sankofa and Hoodoo

Cultural worker Sara Makeba Daise, a fifth-generation Gullah Geechee diviner, is at the forefront of this reclamation with her forthcoming book, “Sankofa Shadow Work.” Daise, known from the 90s show “Gullah Gullah Island,” builds on her foundation to connect pop culture’s glimpses of ancestry with lived realities. October, being both Gullah Geechee Heritage Month and Hoodoo Heritage Month, highlights the inseparable nature of these traditions.

The Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans, have preserved African traditions, language, and foodways. Hoodoo, or root work, emerged from this landscape of survival, blending African cosmologies and Indigenous knowledge—a practice specific to the African American experience.

Pop Culture as an Entry Point

Pop culture has been signaling this return for years. Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” spurred interest in films like “Daughters of the Dust,” and Tina Knowles’ memoir “Matriarch” affirms the power of ancestral wisdom. Even network dramas are beginning to nod to conjure, bringing these once-whispered practices into the mainstream.

Daise emphasizes that while representation in media like “Sinners” is valuable, it’s an entry point, not the end goal. The film’s positive depiction of Hoodoo as a source of power and protection, rather than horror, is a significant step. The concept of Sankofa, an Akan word meaning ‘go back and get it,’ perfectly encapsulates this movement—returning to the wisdom of the past to move forward.

    Finding Wisdom in Everyday Life

For those curious about reconnecting, Daise suggests looking for memory in plain sight. Naturopathic remedies, family healing traditions, and even the nuances of family language can be indicators of ancestral wisdom. She also stresses the importance of embodied presence—slowing down, engaging the senses, and finding grace for oneself and one’s ancestors.

Starting points can be simple: establishing an altar practice, intentionally acknowledging ancestors, and paying attention to dreams and recurring questions. However, Daise also warns against blindly embracing everything, emphasizing the need for discernment, especially given modern surveillance. Reclaiming these practices is about reintegration, honoring humanity, and imagining futures beyond oppressive systems.

  • Debbie Allen’s Barbie Doll: ‘Everything’ to the Icon

When you think of Debbie Allen, words like ‘legend,’ ‘icon,’ and ‘trailblazer’ immediately come to mind. From her unforgettable role as Lydia Grant in ‘Fame’ to her extensive directing career and her dedication to nurturing young talent at her dance academy, Allen has left an indelible mark on the arts. Now, Mattel is celebrating her incredible journey with a brand-new Barbie Tribute Doll, and for Debbie Allen, it’s truly ‘everything’.

    More Than Just a Doll

While Allen has received numerous prestigious awards, including Kennedy Center Honors and an Emmy Governors Award, she shared with theGrio that this Barbie honor feels uniquely special. ‘Just getting a Barbie was everything,’ she exclaimed with a smile. It’s a tangible piece of her legacy that children can now hold and connect with.

The doll itself is a stunning homage to her ‘Fame’ character, Lydia Grant. Dressed in a shimmery off-shoulder top, a gold belt, purple fringe pants, and leg warmers, the Barbie perfectly captures the iconic 80s aesthetic that made Allen the first Black woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a television comedy or musical.

    Reflecting a Lifetime of Dreams

Looking at her Barbie, Allen sees not just the choreographer from ‘Fame,’ but a reflection of her entire multifaceted career. She sees the dancer who traveled the world, the artist who collaborated with legends like Bob Fosse, the director who shaped television, and the devoted mother who welcomed her children.

But beyond celebrating her own achievements, Allen views the doll as a powerful mirror for the next generation. ‘It’s wonderful for children to see that image of themselves in me,’ she explained. The ability for any child, regardless of their background, to connect with a doll that represents someone they admire is a significant moment.

    Nurturing Future Talent

This sentiment of inspiring and uplifting young people is at the core of Allen’s life’s work. Through the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and the Debbie Allen Middle School, she provides vital access to the arts, encouraging students to dream big and pursue their passions with purpose. Initiatives like her annual Los Angeles block party, offering free dance classes and community celebration, underscore her commitment.

Allen sees these efforts as a ‘mission of purpose,’ aiming to offer a ‘real glimmer and a path of light’ in a world often filled with negativity. She believes in the power of leadership that focuses on positivity and the beauty of the world, finding inspiration in the daily sunrise and sunset.

Reflecting on her own childhood in Houston, where she played with Barbies before forging her own path, Allen offers advice to her younger self: ‘keep going, stay curious… and never be afraid.’ She believes her name was always destined for a bright future, urging her to ‘put on your dancing shoes and kickball change up the lane.’

Just as Lydia Grant famously asked, ‘You want fame? • DC Design Week: Sisterhood, Style, and Legacy

Remember that beautiful phrase, “the art of being a good girlfriend”? In Black girlhood culture, it’s more than just friendship; it’s a legacy. It’s watching our mothers and their lifelong friends support each other, share resources, and build genuine community. DC Design Week 2025 brought that spirit back, reminding us what happens when women connect authentically, creatively, and with love.

    Friendship as the Foundation

This year’s DC Design Week wasn’t orchestrated by strangers; it was powered by a vibrant community of women already linked by friendship, family, and creative collaborations. Some were high school sweethearts, others were neighbors or cousins, all orbiting the same creative spheres. They brought unique gifts but shared a common language of trust, care, and respect – a chemistry that can only be nurtured, not manufactured.

Too often, women’s collaborations are framed as competitive. But the team behind DC Design Week embodied the opposite. Rooted in decades of friendship, open communication, and shared laughter, they navigated creative differences with grace. As one participant, Aja, put it, disagreements were managed by “submitting in disagreements when you respect each other’s gift.” This mutual respect was the guiding principle.

    A Cultural Reset Through Intention

Presented by AIGA DC, this year’s Design Week was more than just panels and exhibits; it was a living testament to intentional leadership. Under the guidance of Chair Eden Patrick and Deputy Chair Robbie Stanfield, the 10-day celebration served as a cultural reset for the District. The programming masterfully blended art, architecture, design, and film with the warmth of friendship and the elegance of luxury.

From exclusive showings at luxury flagship stores to intimate dinners and gatherings, the event offered diverse experiences. Attendees enjoyed portfolio reviews with top D.C. executives and celebrated cultural powerhouses at the “Homegrown” showcase. Each moment invited participants into an atmosphere of inclusive luxury, where artistry met accessibility, and creativity flourished as both culture and community.

    Investing in Legacy Through Sisterhood

Sponsored by major brands like Porsche, Arc’teryx, and Adobe, the week struck a perfect balance between refinement and authenticity. It proved that elegance and community aren’t mutually exclusive; they are deeply connected. This spirit of togetherness feels particularly relevant today, especially considering a recent survey found that people spend an average of $250 a month on social activities.

While we love our “girl dinners” and trips, DC Design Week reminded us of a more profound investment. By channeling that same energy into building community and legacy within our friendships, we not only reduce costs but significantly increase value. When sisterhood becomes purpose-driven, it doesn’t just sustain us—it creates something lasting, a truly worthwhile investment.

Her podcast, ‘The Pre-Game With Kayla Nicole,’ launched in the spring, is described as an extension of her personal group chat. Redefining Wellness with Tribe Therapē

  • Future Launches Roué Wine and Cocktails

While Future is known for his chart-topping hits and signature sound, he’s now making waves in a new arena: the spirits industry! Teaming up with beverage expert Ryan Ayotte, the Atlanta rapper has launched Roué, a sophisticated new line of fine wines and Ready-to-Drink (RTD) cocktails.

A Vision for Diversity in Wine

Future explained that his inspiration came from a desire for a wine brand that truly reflected his current lifestyle and the culture he’s a part of. ‘I enjoy wine, but couldn’t find a brand that truly reflected me, something current, innovative, and connected to the culture,’ he stated in a press release. ‘So, I created it.’

He envisions Roué as a brand that brings diversity to the wine world, showcasing the power of creativity and culture colliding. ‘Roué is for everyone who’s ever felt unseen in spaces like this. Roué is culture, creativity, and authenticity in a bottle,’ Future added, emphasizing inclusivity and genuine expression.

    Crafting Quality with Style

The Roué launch features a 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, with grapes sourced from California’s renowned wine regions. But they didn’t stop at wine; Roué also introduced two RTD cocktails: Ruby Passion and Lemon Lust. Ayotte highlighted their commitment to starting from scratch, ensuring a unique product rather than just a rebranded generic wine.

Ayotte elaborated on the design process, explaining how the custom bottle and packaging were meticulously crafted to mirror Future’s multi-dimensional persona – equally at home on the streets of Atlanta as he is on the red carpet. The goal was to create a premium experience that appeals to today’s consumers who value quality and style without the pretentiousness often associated with traditional wine culture.

    Flavor Profiles and Pairings

The Ruby Passion RTD, with an 8% ABV, blends a red wine base with notes of strawberry, pomegranate, apple, raspberry, and a hint of lemon. Lemon Lust offers a crisp white wine base with a vibrant mix of lemon and orange, designed to be bold without being overly sweet. For food pairings, the Cabernet Sauvignon is recommended with filet mignon, wagyu burgers, or charcuterie boards, while the Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with seafood or creamy dishes.

Ayotte believes Roué sets a new standard for a new generation, offering something truly unique in a competitive market. The brand is now available in 44 states and can be purchased through major retailers like BevMo and Total Wine, as well as directly from drinkroue.com.

  • Cardi B Tackles Maternal Health Crisis

Cardi B is stepping up to tackle a critical issue: the maternal health crisis. The Grammy-winning artist and mom of four has launched a powerful new campaign with the organic baby formula brand Bobbie, aiming to shed light on the challenges mothers face and advocate for better support systems.

Introducing ‘Cardi Bobbie’: Chief Confidence Officer

In a series of playful videos, Cardi B introduces her alter ego, “Cardi Bobbie,” taking on the role of the brand’s “Chief Confidence Officer.” She humorously addresses late-night calls from parents struggling with baby-feeding, offering advice and reassurance. Her message is clear: motherhood is a demanding job, and every mom deserves support.

“Motherhood is a real ass job,” Cardi B stated in an Instagram post, emphasizing the need for mothers to feel confident in safe delivery, protected paid leave, and the ability to feed their babies without judgment. She champions the idea that there’s no shame in various feeding methods, including combination feeding.

Addressing Racial Disparities in Maternal Health

Beyond the lighthearted approach, Cardi B doesn’t shy away from the serious disparities in maternal health outcomes. She pointedly highlights that Black and brown women are three times more likely to experience pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts. This partnership, she stresses, is about more than just formula; it’s about education, access to care, and building community support.

“Every mother deserves to have a healthy and safe delivery,” Cardi B explained, advocating for healthcare providers who prioritize the well-being of both mother and baby. Her involvement aims to ensure that mothers feel truly cared for throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

    Advocacy and Support for Parents

The campaign encourages parents to share their personal feeding and parenting stories by calling 732-QQ-CARDI. These stories will be sent directly to lawmakers through Bobbie’s advocacy arm, Bobbie for Change. As a tangible form of support, a select number of callers will receive three months of paid parental leave, equivalent to the proposed Family Act’s monthly benefit.

    Addressing Criticisms and Standing Firm

While the campaign has garnered praise, it hasn’t been without its critics. Some have questioned Cardi B’s partnership with a formula brand, given historical issues faced by Black and brown mothers regarding formula versus breastfeeding advocacy. Others have raised concerns about the rapper’s public feuds potentially distracting from the cause. However, Bobbie has publicly defended their choice, stating that Cardi has been a “fierce advocate for moms and women” throughout the campaign.

Cardi B’s commitment to maternal health shines through this campaign, bringing much-needed attention to critical issues and advocating for tangible support for mothers across the country.

What are your thoughts on Cardi B’s new campaign? Do you believe celebrity advocacy can make a difference in the maternal health crisis? Share your views in the comments below!
