  • Study: Gold Digging Isn’t Just for Women

We’ve all heard the stereotype: the ‘gold digger,’ usually depicted as a woman solely interested in a partner’s wealth. But what if that stereotype is too narrow? A fascinating new study from the Behavioral and Social Sciences Institute suggests that gold-digging behavior isn’t exclusive to women—men exhibit these tendencies too.

    Challenging the Stereotype

Researchers referenced the iconic 2005 hit song “Gold Digger” by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, noting how its lyrics capture the public’s perception: exploiting money, avoiding poor partners, and being female. However, the study’s authors explicitly state, “Gold digging, often stereotyped as female behavior, is in fact not limited to women.”

The study, led by psychologist Lennart Freyth, surveyed 351 adults around age 30, encompassing various sexual orientations. Participants were asked to choose between partners based on material benefits versus emotional intimacy, using a questionnaire that also measured personality traits like narcissism, psychopathy, and sadism, alongside demographic factors.

    Who Are the ‘Gold Diggers’?

The findings revealed some intriguing patterns. Men with left-leaning political views showed the highest rates of this behavior, described as a “partly psychopathy-linked social tactic.” Across both sexes, gold digging was linked to narcissism, psychopathy, expectations of date investment, and perceived mate value. Interestingly, ‘sadism’ was only found among female gold diggers in this study.

The study also highlighted that non-heterosexual men (gay or bisexual) with left-leaning views scored highest on gold-digging tendencies. Among women, non-heterosexual participants with mid-left views scored higher than heterosexual women, while right-leaning non-heterosexual women scored lower. Overall, non-heterosexual individuals and those with left-wing political views tended to score higher than their heterosexual and right-wing counterparts.

    The ‘Reckless’ Narcissist

Researchers noted that both male and female gold diggers often exhibit traits of “reckless” narcissists. These individuals may use charm and appearance to attract wealthy partners. Freyth advises potential targets to be wary of “performative” men—those who present as overly sensitive or progressive but are primarily motivated by financial gain.

He explains that appearing agreeable and compassionate can make someone seem less threatening than someone who challenges the status quo. “Keep in mind that even a guy who appears thoughtful and compassionate might have interests beyond your character,” Freyth cautioned, reminding us that surface-level impressions can be deceiving.

    • New study suggests gold-digging behavior is not exclusive to women.
    • Men, particularly those with left-leaning political views, show high rates.
    • Non-heterosexual men and women scored higher on gold-digging tendencies.
    • Behavior linked to narcissism, psychopathy, and perceived mate value.
    • Gold diggers often exhibit ‘reckless’ narcissistic traits.
    • Researchers warn of ‘performative’ individuals who mask financial motives with charm.

  • Stephanie Elam Departs CNN, Joins Trend of Black Journalists Leaving TV

After an impressive two-decade run, Stephanie Elam is saying goodbye to CNN. Her departure, announced on April 18th, is more than just the end of a long tenure; it’s part of a larger narrative unfolding in television news.

    A Career of Covering History

As a proud Howard University alum, Elam covered a vast spectrum of significant events during her time at CNN. From the cultural impact of Michael Jackson and Prince’s deaths to the complexities of the stock market and the devastating Eaton fire that affected communities like Altadena, she was a consistent presence delivering crucial information.

Reflecting on her career, Elam shared, “For more than 20 years I’ve been in the CNN orbit developing and delivering news stories on everything from the environment and entertainment to business and breaking news of all kinds. I’m so proud of my CNN career. Live or taped, writing packages or doing a show-and-tell, I’ve done it all — and having a front row seat to document history has been a gift.”

A Growing Trend Among Black Journalists

Elam’s exit, though voluntary, highlights a noticeable trend: Black journalists are increasingly leaving the world of network television news. This isn’t always by choice; recent mass layoffs at networks like NBC and CBS have also contributed to this shift.

Just last month, Shawna Thomas, a producer for “CBS Mornings,” announced her departure, citing exhaustion. She described her decision not as a final goodbye, but as the beginning of a countdown to a less demanding schedule, expressing gratitude for the growth and storytelling experiences gained during her five years at the show.

    Moments of Heart and Sisterhood

One of Elam’s most memorable on-air moments occurred in 2025 when she delivered a heartfelt eulogy for her friend, former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis, who passed away from breast cancer. Elam, alongside CNN anchor Sara Sidner (who was also battling cancer at the time), shared a deeply personal conversation that showcased Elam’s role as a supportive friend and advocate for sisterhood.

CNN acknowledged Elam’s significant contributions, stating, “Stephanie brought clarity, credibility, and heart to every story she touched over her two decades at CNN. Her versatility and natural ability to connect with audiences made her a trusted voice and a valued colleague.”

The departure of experienced journalists like Elam, Maurice DuBois (from “CBS Evening News”), and Michelle Miller (from “CBS Saturday Morning”) signals a potential shift in the media landscape. While Elam hasn’t revealed her next steps, her absence from the screen is already being felt.

In a stark reminder that even everyday moments can hold unexpected dangers, Sarah Jakes Roberts, daughter of Bishop T.D. Jakes, has shared a harrowing account of a trampoline accident that left her hospitalized and facing the terrifying possibility of paralysis.

    A Playful Moment Turns Alarming

What started as a fun time playing with her daughter, Ella, on a trampoline quickly took a frightening turn. Roberts recounted on Instagram how she landed awkwardly on her neck. The immediate sensation was alarming, with several pops heard in her neck, signaling a potentially severe injury.

    Facing the Risk of Paralysis

The incident led to a scary ordeal involving two hospitals and multiple scans. The diagnosis was serious: a fractured neck, herniated discs, and endangered areas of her spine. Doctors indicated that a slight shift in the impact could have resulted in paralysis, a reality that thankfully did not come to pass.

Gratitude for Recovery and a Path Forward

Roberts shared that she will need to wear a neck brace for the next 4-6 weeks to ensure stability and prevent further damage. She expressed profound gratitude, noting, “One disc up or one disc lower, and this would’ve been a different testimony. Instead, I’ll be wearing this brace… Rest and recovery will give my body a chance to heal.”

Known for her powerful messages on resilience and healing, Roberts’ own experience now serves as a profound testament to her teachings. She plans to “lie low” while navigating this injury, leaning on the support of God, friends, and family. She humorously added that if people see her out and about moving slowly, they should know she’s still celebrating life, even with a neck brace.

  • Understanding FBA: Foundational Black Americans Explained

You’ve likely seen the acronym FBA popping up everywhere – on social media, merchandise, and in discussions about Black identity. But what exactly does FBA stand for, and what are the deeper meanings, history, and debates surrounding it? Let’s break down the concept of Foundational Black Americans without the spin.

    What Does FBA Stand For?

FBA stands for Foundational Black Americans. This term specifically refers to Black individuals in the United States whose ancestors were subjected to chattel slavery within the U.S. and were subsequently emancipated after the Civil War. The core principle is lineage tracing directly back to those enslaved in America, as formalized by the 13th Amendment. This definition excludes African immigrants, Caribbean immigrants, Afro-Latinos, and their descendants, regardless of how long they’ve resided in the country, because their ancestors were not specifically enslaved in the United States.

The Origins of the FBA Movement

The modern FBA movement is largely attributed to media personality, filmmaker, and author Tariq Nasheed. In the early 2020s, Nasheed heavily promoted the term through platforms like Twitter Spaces, YouTube, and his documentaries. He framed FBA as a way to establish a distinct ethnic identity for Black Americans whose ancestors’ forced labor built the nation’s economic foundation. FBA emerged from an earlier movement called ADOS (American Descendants of Slavery), founded by Yvette Carnell and Antonio Moore. ADOS shares the central argument that descendants of American chattel slavery are owed specific reparations tied to that historical injustice. While FBA and ADOS share significant ideological overlap, they are led by different figures and operate on distinct platforms, with many FBA supporters viewing ADOS as a precursor and some ADOS supporters seeing FBA as an offshoot.

The Core Argument: A Debt Owed

At its heart, the FBA movement argues that the ancestors of Foundational Black Americans built the United States’ economic infrastructure through unpaid labor and without legal protection. They contend that the debt owed for this historical exploitation should not be diluted by including other Black populations who did not share this specific history of American chattel slavery. Supporters believe that broader terms like “African American” or “Black” obscure the unique and specific harm caused by slavery. Consequently, they advocate for reparations, political representation, and economic protections to be distributed based on this lineage, rather than broader racial categories.

    Symbols of the Movement

The movement has adopted its own symbol: the Maroon Flag. This flag features five stars representing key regions where escaped enslaved Africans formed independent maroon communities – Virginia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Carolinas. It also includes an axe and a torch, symbols of the weapons maroons used during their revolts for freedom. Merchandise like hoodies, shirts, and pins bearing the flag and the FBA acronym are sold by independent vendors, contributing to the movement’s cultural presence.

    What FBA Supporters Want

While specific political demands can vary among proponents, the common threads are consistent. Key goals include:
    – **Lineage-Based Reparations:** Financial reparations paid by the U.S. government directly to descendants of American chattel slavery.
    – **Verification Process:** Establishing a system to accurately determine who qualifies as FBA.
    – **Specific Representation:** Advocating for representation in media, politics, and business led by FBA spokespeople, rather than what they term “anchored tethers” (Black individuals perceived as speaking for the group without sharing the specific lineage).
    – **Policy Protection:** Implementing policies to safeguard resources perceived as intended for Black Americans from being diluted by immigration frameworks.

    Criticism and Controversy

The FBA movement faces significant criticism, particularly from within the Black community. Critics on the left argue that FBA employs exclusionary logic, drawing parallels to MAGA-style “othering” by creating divisions within the Black community. Pan-Africanists contend that the movement fractures the diaspora, which they believe should be unified. They also point out the complexities of tracing lineage due to the historical movement of enslaved Africans across the Americas and the Caribbean. Furthermore, a Carnegie Mellon research paper suggested that FBA messaging tactics resemble right-wing disinformation patterns, sometimes used to suppress Black voter turnout, a comparison supporters reject. Some Black Americans also reject the FBA label on identity grounds, feeling it denies their broader African heritage and DNA.

    Where the Movement Stands Today

In 2026, FBA has achieved a level of visibility unseen before its emergence on Black Twitter. The movement is increasingly influencing political discourse, with some FBA voices urging Black voters to withhold support from Democrats unless lineage-based reparations are included in party platforms. Merchandise sales are reportedly up, YouTube channels dedicated to FBA content are growing, and podcasts and online discussions are attracting large audiences. The debate within the Black community about FBA—between those who identify with it, those who reject it, and those still forming their opinions—is intensifying.

    The Bottom Line

FBA is a lineage-based movement asserting that descendants of American chattel slavery constitute a distinct group deserving specific recognition, protection, and repair. Supporters view it as a necessary specificity and an honest acknowledgment of who built the nation. Critics, however, see it as an exclusionary ideology that echoes harmful historical patterns. Regardless of where one stands, the conversation surrounding FBA is becoming a significant cultural fault line within the Black community this decade.

What are your thoughts on the FBA movement? Do you identify with its principles, or do you have concerns about its exclusionary aspects? Share your perspective in the comments below!

  • Brooklyn Teen’s Ivy League Dream Comes True

Imagine the scene: a classroom buzzing with anticipation, then erupting into cheers as one student’s incredible achievement is announced. That’s exactly what happened when 17-year-old Olivia Connie-Perkins, a senior at Success Academy High School of the Liberal Arts in Brooklyn, received her acceptance to Brown University. This momentous occasion not only marks a personal triumph but also a historic first for her school.

    A Viral Moment of Celebration

The heartwarming moment was captured on video in December 2025 and shared by the school, quickly going viral. As the principal announced Olivia’s Ivy League acceptance over the intercom, the classroom erupted. Students jumped to their feet, cheering, clapping, and celebrating with genuine emotion. Olivia herself was visibly surprised, covering her mouth as the wave of support washed over her.

Olivia shared that the reaction highlighted the strong community at Success Academy. “We always celebrate each other and our accomplishments,” she told People. “It felt really nice to experience that and it’s also been great to celebrate all of my peers’ acceptances.” This collective joy resonated deeply with viewers online, who were touched by the supportive atmosphere.

    More Than Just an Acceptance

Olivia’s accomplishment and the classroom’s reaction even earned her a spot on “The Jennifer Hudson Show.” She emphasized that her school has been instrumental in her academic journey, providing opportunities to explore her passions and extracurricular activities. “I know that many children do not get these same opportunities, so I am grateful that I was able to attend a school like Success Academy,” she stated.

While this is the first Ivy League acceptance for the Brooklyn campus, which opened in 2022, Success Academy schools have a strong history of college admissions. Graduates have maintained a 100% college acceptance rate for nine consecutive years, with many admitted to highly selective institutions. This consistent success underscores the dedication of both the students and the educational system.

    Years of Dedication Pay Off

For Olivia, this acceptance is the culmination of years of hard work. She navigated a challenging academic path, including numerous Advanced Placement classes, while also pursuing her creative interests in art and leading a student club. As a first-generation college student, her achievement carries even greater significance.

Brown University, with its renowned open curriculum and vibrant campus environment, had long been a goal for Olivia. This viral moment serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that supportive school communities can have, amplifying individual success through collective encouragement.

  • Eddie Murphy & Martin Lawrence’s Kids Welcome Baby Ari Skye!

Get ready for some heartwarming news straight from Hollywood! Two comedy titans, Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, are officially grandparents. Eddie Murphy himself spilled the beans, confirming that his son, Eric Murphy, and Martin Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmin Lawrence, have welcomed their very first child together. It’s a beautiful new chapter for these two families, blending two iconic entertainment legacies.

A New Arrival: Baby Ari Skye

The exciting announcement came from Murphy himself at the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony on April 18th. He revealed that his son Eric and Jasmin welcomed a baby girl named Ari Skye. According to Murphy, little Ari Skye arrived just about one to two weeks before he shared the news with E! News. “They just had a baby girl. They just had her two weeks ago, or a week ago. Yeah, Ari Skye,” Murphy shared with a smile.

    Family Over Fame: Murphy’s Perspective

This joyous occasion also prompted Murphy to reflect on his own journey with parenthood. As a father of 10, he emphasized that his true legacy isn’t his illustrious career, but his children. He shared a candid thought on parenting advice, noting that kids often learn more from watching their parents than from direct instruction. It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply, especially as he’s being honored for his incredible contributions to film and comedy.

The couple, who reportedly tied the knot in a private ceremony in 2025, had previously shared their pregnancy news earlier this year. The announcement was met with immense excitement from both the Murphy and Lawrence camps, with Jasmin’s father, Martin Lawrence, also expressing his joy about becoming a grandfather.

A Private Relationship, A Public Joy

Jasmin Lawrence, 30, and Eric Murphy, 36, have generally kept their relationship out of the spotlight. However, their union has naturally garnered attention due to their famous fathers. The arrival of baby Ari Skye now beautifully adds a new generation to these two powerhouse entertainment families.

While Eddie Murphy continues to be celebrated for his groundbreaking work, his latest words highlight where his true priorities lie: family. The birth of his granddaughter is clearly a personal milestone that, by his own admission, means more than any professional award.

  • Keisha Lance Bottoms: Father’s Legacy Shapes Politics

What if the defining moments of your childhood weren’t just about growing up, but about understanding the complexities of the justice system? For former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, this is precisely her reality. In a candid new profile, she opens up about the dual legacy of her father, the iconic 1960s soul singer Major Lance, and how his struggles profoundly shaped her political path.

From Soul Music Stages to Prison Visiting Rooms

Bottoms recalls a childhood briefly illuminated by the glamour of the music industry, experiencing the excitement of her father performing and being part of a vibrant Black cultural scene. However, this world dramatically shifted when she was around eight years old. Her father was arrested and later convicted on cocaine trafficking charges, a pivotal event that transformed her childhood from concert halls to prison visiting rooms.

This period, which she describes as the ‘missing years,’ introduced her early to the deep stigma associated with families impacted by incarceration. Instead of shying away from this difficult history, Bottoms has consistently woven it into the fabric of her public life and policy initiatives. Her work on criminal justice reform, including efforts to revise bail laws and reduce unnecessary criminalization, stems directly from this personal understanding.

A Foundation for Policy and Connection

During her 2017 mayoral campaign, Bottoms made the deliberate choice to speak openly about her father’s incarceration. This strategy not only preempted potential political attacks but also allowed her to forge a powerful connection with voters who had navigated similar experiences. It highlighted how labels like ‘offender’ can overshadow an individual’s humanity, a perspective rooted in seeing her father not just as a case file, but as a talented artist whose life was irrevocably altered.

The profile also delves into Major Lance’s complex legacy – a pioneer of the ‘Chicago sound’ whose later years reflected the instability faced by many Black artists of his era. Bottoms maintained a relationship with her father through letters and visits, a bond that instilled in her a strong belief in second chances. This conviction has guided her throughout her career, from City Hall in Atlanta to her advisory role in the Biden-Harris administration.

Ultimately, the story underscores a vital truth: legacy is rarely a straight line. For Keisha Lance Bottoms, the music of her father provided the soundtrack to her youth, while his struggles have undeniably shaped the mission and direction of her public service career.
