  • Jack Thornell, Photographer of Meredith Shooting, Dies at 86

We’re remembering a pivotal figure in visual journalism. Jack Thornell, the acclaimed Associated Press photographer whose lens captured one of the most powerful images of the Civil Rights Movement, has passed away at the age of 86. His iconic photograph of a wounded James Meredith became a defining moment, bringing the struggle for civil rights into sharp focus for the nation and the world.

A Career Defined by Critical Moments

Thornell spent an impressive four decades with the AP, from 1964 to 2004, documenting a wide range of events from natural disasters to prominent political figures. However, it was his early and impactful coverage of the Civil Rights Movement that truly cemented his legacy. On his very first day with the AP’s New Orleans bureau, he covered the integration of a Mississippi Gulf Coast school, setting the tone for a career dedicated to bearing witness.

His most consequential photograph was taken in June 1966. Thornell, then just 26, was assigned to cover James Meredith’s ‘March Against Fear,’ a courageous solo walk through Mississippi aimed at encouraging Black residents to register and vote. Meredith, who had already broken barriers by integrating the University of Mississippi four years prior, was shot by a gunman on the second day of the march.

The Iconic Photograph and Its Impact

Thornell was roadside when the shots rang out. In the midst of the chaos, he captured a searing image of Meredith on the ground, arms outstretched, his head turned towards his attacker. Thornell himself initially feared he might have missed the crucial shot. Thankfully, Meredith survived the shooting, and the gunman, Aubrey James Norvell, was apprehended and eventually sentenced. Thornell’s powerful photograph earned him the Pulitzer Prize in 1967.

Beyond the Meredith shooting, Thornell’s extensive portfolio includes documenting the burned station wagon of civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman after their tragic murder in 1964. He also covered the historic Selma-to-Montgomery march and photographed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. multiple times, including the poignant moment when King’s family viewed his body following his assassination in 1968.

    A Legacy of Witnessing History

His son, Jay Thornell, described his father as someone who rarely paused to fully grasp the gravity of the events he was documenting. “Through his pictures, he was serving the world and exposing things that were going on in places that other parts of the world and country didn’t know about during the Civil Rights era,” Jay Thornell shared, highlighting the profound impact of his father’s work.

Jack Thornell’s photographs played a crucial role in documenting history. What other photographers do you think have significantly shaped our understanding of historical events? Let us know in the comments!

  • Tristan Thompson Seeks Legal Control of Brother Amari’s Care

It’s a situation that highlights the deep bonds of family, even amidst the spotlight of professional sports. NBA star Tristan Thompson is taking a significant step to ensure the lifelong well-being of his younger brother, Amari. He’s filed for a limited conservatorship, a legal move designed to provide consistent care and oversight for Amari as he navigates adulthood.

    Understanding Amari’s Needs

This isn’t a new responsibility for Tristan. Following the heartbreaking loss of their mother, Andrea Thompson, in 2023, Tristan stepped up to become Amari’s primary caregiver. Court documents reveal that Amari, who is 19, has significant intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. These challenges mean he requires constant support for daily living and cannot manage his personal or financial affairs independently.

Adding to these complexities, Amari also lives with epilepsy and needs round-the-clock care. It’s a heavy load, but one Tristan seems determined to carry, ensuring his brother receives the best possible support system.

A Formal Step for Long-Term Care

The conservatorship filing is a formalization of the care Tristan has already been providing. He was granted legal guardianship of Amari in 2024, even before Amari turned 18. This earlier step was necessary because their father has been largely absent, leaving Tristan as the closest available family member to ensure Amari’s needs were met.

Unlike guardianship for minors, conservatorship is specifically for adults who, due to medical or developmental conditions, are unable to manage their own lives. This move would grant Tristan the legal authority to make crucial decisions about Amari’s healthcare, daily routines, and financial matters as he grows older.

    A Network of Support

Tristan has been open about the demanding nature of Amari’s care. He’s spoken about the vital role of dedicated caregivers and family members who help manage Amari’s needs. Even his former partner, Khloé Kardashian, has been involved, emphasizing the importance of stability for Amari, especially given his medical condition and frequent seizures.

Amari is fully disabled, so he doesn’t talk or walk on his own, so everything is assisted. They’ve been a blessing and angels in disguise, especially with my mom passing away, being able to meet two amazing human beings that really helped me with this journey. — Tristan Thompson

With his demanding NBA schedule involving frequent travel, Tristan relies heavily on this support network. To maintain consistency, Amari primarily resides in Los Angeles, where his care team can provide the stable environment he needs. The court’s approval of the conservatorship would solidify this framework, ensuring Amari’s continued well-being and long-term support.

  • Gene Therapy Offers New Hope for Sickle Cell Patients

Imagine a life where a chronic condition doesn’t dictate your dreams. For a 23-year-old in Louisiana, that future is looking brighter than ever thanks to a revolutionary gene therapy for sickle cell disease. He’s the first in his state to undergo this cutting-edge treatment, and the early results are incredibly promising!

A Glimmer of Hope for Sickle Cell Warriors

Sickle cell disease is a tough inherited condition that affects red blood cells, turning them into a rigid, sickle shape. This can lead to agonizing pain, serious organ damage, and a shorter lifespan. For years, this has been the reality for our patient, Daniel Cressy, whose daily life was often overshadowed by chronic pain.

But now, there’s a new reason for optimism. After a complex procedure, Daniel was discharged from the hospital following a six-week stay. Doctors are closely monitoring his progress, and the initial signs suggest this gene therapy could offer a long-term, perhaps even permanent, solution.

How Does This Groundbreaking Therapy Work?

The process is quite intricate. First, doctors extracted Daniel’s own stem cells. These cells were then sent overseas for gene editing. Once modified, they were reintroduced into his body after chemotherapy had cleared out his existing bone marrow.

The ultimate goal? To retrain his body to produce healthy, round red blood cells instead of the problematic sickle-shaped ones. Dr. Ben Watkins of LCMC Health shared that early indicators are positive, with Daniel’s body showing signs of generating new hemoglobin and rebuilding his immune system. These are crucial steps showing the therapy is taking hold.

    A Milestone in Medical Advancement

This isn’t just a personal victory for Daniel; it’s a significant leap forward for medical science. This gene therapy has been performed on fewer than 100 patients worldwide, making it a truly pioneering treatment. While Daniel is still in his recovery phase, the medical community is buzzing with optimism about the long-term potential.

    Soaring Towards a Dream

Beyond the medical implications, this treatment could be life-changing for Daniel on a personal level. He’s always dreamed of becoming a pilot, a goal that was previously out of reach due to his sickle cell disease. Even during his hospital stay, he kept his dream alive, practicing on a flight simulator.

Now, with his health prospects looking up, Daniel is eager to pursue his aviation ambitions. He’s also bravely sharing his journey, hoping to inspire other individuals living with sickle cell disease to explore these innovative treatment options. His story is already giving hope to those who were once hesitant about gene therapy, showcasing the incredible possibilities as this technology becomes more accessible.

  • Prom Send-Offs: Extravagance Meets Backlash

Springtime means warmer weather, blooming flowers, and for many teenagers, the highly anticipated prom season! But this year, alongside the dazzling photos of teens arriving in style, there’s a growing chorus of online criticism. Extravagant prom send-offs, once a niche event, are now going viral, and with that popularity comes a significant backlash.

The Rise of the ‘Hood Prom’ and Online Scrutiny

We’re seeing teens step onto mock red carpets, pose with luxury cars, and showcase custom-designed outfits. While friends and family cheer them on, a wave of adult strangers online are quick to judge, often using terms like ‘hood prom’ and linking it to ‘baby mama culture.’ This criticism, sometimes laced with racial undertones, highlights a broader trend of adults scrutinizing teen celebrations.

This isn’t just about prom. The same critical lens is often applied to birthday trips, bachelorette parties, baby showers, and even content about pets. It seems the joy of witnessing others celebrate is increasingly overshadowed by judgment, driven by our own perceived limitations or biases.

Why the Judgment? Social Media’s Role

Why do we feel compelled to analyze and critique the celebrations of others, especially teenagers? Many adults offering these lengthy critiques don’t have children or work with them, yet they feel qualified to pass judgment on prom culture. Social media has amplified this, turning everyday events into perceived red carpet affairs.

Historically, people tried to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ in their immediate community. Television brought celebrities into our homes, and now social media blurs the lines, making everyone’s life seem like a performance. This constant exposure can lead to comparison and, unfortunately, criticism.

    Letting Teens Have Their Moment

At its core, what are we really upset about? Is the extravagance truly harmful to the teens themselves? It’s hard to argue that enjoying a dream prom night leads to maladjustment. Think back to your own teenage years – remember the excitement of getting ready, maybe a drugstore makeup haul that felt like a splurge?

Culture evolves, and so do celebrations. The desire for more elaborate events is often fueled by what we see and imagine. Instead of criticizing, perhaps we should embrace the idea of letting young people have their over-the-top moments, their joy, and their dreams realized.

    • Is this a child celebrating, making it not your peer and perhaps not your business?
    • Is anyone being harmed by this celebration?
    • Is the person simply happy and expressing joy?
    • If you can’t share in their joy, can you simply scroll past?

Before you tap that comment button to critique a stranger’s celebration, take a moment to consider these questions. Let’s encourage joy and allow young people to create memorable moments, especially during significant milestones like prom.

What are your thoughts on the elaborate prom send-off trend? Do you think the criticism is justified? Share your views in the comments below!

  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: From City Planning to Yale & Hollywood

Imagine this: you’re working a steady job in city planning, thinking you’ve got your career path figured out. Then, bam! You get laid off. For many, that might be a setback, but for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, it was the unexpected push he needed to chase his true passion – acting.

    From Architecture to Acting Dreams

Before his breakout roles in “Watchmen” and Marvel’s “Wonder Man,” and before he was even considering a career in acting, Yahya was studying architecture at UC Berkeley. During his time there, he had to work on his public speaking skills, which helped him confront a stutter he inherited from his father. This experience, coupled with being the youngest of six and frequently moving schools, taught him resilience.

It was after his 10-month stint in city planning, which ended with a layoff, that Yahya decided to pivot. “I said, ‘Man, I think I’m going to go try the acting thing ’cause that was fun,’” he recalled on “The Pivot” podcast. He set a clear goal: give acting his best shot for three years. If significant progress wasn’t made, he planned to return to graduate school for city politics.

The Yale Audition and Hollywood Calling

That three-year plan turned out to be incredibly effective, though much shorter than anticipated. Within just 14 months, Yahya received acceptance letters from prestigious institutions like Yale, NYU, and Harvard, along with the American Conservatory Theater. This incredible validation led him to Yale, where he earned his Master’s of Fine Arts in 2015.

His acting journey quickly gained momentum. Not long after graduating, he landed his first major role as Cadillac in the Netflix series “The Get Down.” Since then, his career has soared, culminating in an Emmy win for his role in “Watchmen.”

    Success Beyond External Validation

Despite achieving such high honors, Yahya has found a deeper understanding of success. He realized that true happiness and fulfillment don’t come from external awards or recognition. “That feeling is not going to come from nothing external. It’s going to come from how you feel about yourself, from like the impact that you make on the world, the impact that you make on your family,” he shared.

This perspective is crucial as he takes on his next major role: playing John Creasy in Netflix’s adaptation of “Man on Fire.” He’s not focused on competing with Denzel Washington’s iconic portrayal but rather on bringing his own unique interpretation to the character. As he puts it, quoting an acting teacher, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be interesting?” Yahya is clearly choosing to be interesting, constantly pushing boundaries and bringing depth to complex characters.

  • Speedy Morman’s Exit: A Trend in Media?

After more than a decade with Complex, Speedy Morman has announced his departure, marking the end of an incredible era. He’s not just leaving a job; he’s stepping into the growing movement of Black journalists and media personalities who are choosing to bet on themselves and go independent. This shift reflects significant changes happening across the media landscape.

A Decade at Complex and a Leap to Independence

Morman, who hosted the show ‘360 with Speedy,’ described his time at Complex as an “incredible era.” He’s excited to continue his passion for interviewing and connecting with people on a deeper level, but now with new partners and audiences. “I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years have in store,” he shared, signaling a bright future ahead.

His decision to go independent places him alongside a growing number of Black journalists who are leaving traditional media outlets. Factors like media acquisitions, widespread layoffs, and evolving consumption habits are forcing many to find new, creative ways to pursue their love for storytelling.

    Why Journalists Are Choosing Independence

Former beauty editor and journalist Kayla Greaves points to several key reasons for this trend. “People don’t read anymore. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s reality and we see a lot of traditional media outlets crumbling because of it,” she explains. The shift towards digital content consumed on phones, through videos and audio, means traditional outlets are struggling to adapt.

Greaves also notes that many newsrooms were initially resistant to allowing their editors to become front-facing digital talent. Philip Lewis, president of the Washington Association of Black Journalists, echoes this sentiment, highlighting a “growing number of journalists who have become increasingly disillusioned with the state of our industry.” Many feel news outlets are unwilling to pay a living wage or are afraid to report truthfully on critical issues.

Building Your Own Platform: Autonomy and Control

The desire for autonomy is a major driving force. Entertainment journalist Gia Peppers noticed the precariousness of traditional media early on, leading her to freelance and build her own brand. “I decided then that I would become my own brand and lend my voice to stories and projects that felt aligned with what I wanted to contribute to the world,” she shared.

The acquisition of platforms like Twitter by billionaires has further underscored the importance of owning your audience. Lewis emphasizes the need for a “direct-to-consumer model” through newsletters, websites, or blogs, where content isn’t subject to algorithm changes. This autonomy allows journalists to share stories on their own terms, without layers of approval or the fear of ideas being co-opted.

The Future of Journalism: Independent or Cooperative?

While independent media offers exciting possibilities, it’s not without its challenges. Greaves and Lewis agree that while “journalist-led” platforms could be the future, they require significant funding and experienced leadership. They caution that a million Substack newsletters can’t replace the robust teams of reporters, editors, and fact-checkers needed for in-depth investigative journalism.

Lewis suggests that “worker-owned journalism cooperatives” might be the most sustainable path forward, emphasizing that while one journalist can’t do everything, a team can. The rise of independent creators like Morman signifies a powerful shift, but the industry as a whole is still navigating how to best support and fund impactful journalism in this new era.

    • Speedy Morman is leaving Complex after 10 years to pursue independent ventures.
    • His departure reflects a larger trend of Black journalists leaving traditional media.
    • Reasons include changing media consumption, layoffs, and a desire for autonomy.
    • Journalists are building their own platforms via newsletters, podcasts, and more.
    • The future may lie in well-funded, journalist-led platforms or worker-owned cooperatives.

  • Stephen A. Smith Questions Megan Thee Stallion & Klay Thompson Split

Even if he claims to have ‘no interest’ in the relationship details, Stephen A. Smith has thoughts on the recent breakup between Megan Thee Stallion and NBA star Klay Thompson. The ESPN pundit recently used his “Straight Shooter” podcast to weigh in on the highly publicized split, focusing less on the alleged reasons and more on the public nature of the announcement.

    Questioning the Public Announcement

Smith readily admitted he doesn’t care about the specifics of their romance. Instead, he questioned why Megan Thee Stallion felt the need to make the breakup so public. “Why? How come you just couldn’t break up and go on your merry way?” he asked on his podcast. “How come you couldn’t just say, ‘We had our time together, but I’m back being single again,’ and leave it at that?”

He continued, questioning the need to ‘dog the brother out’ and whether there was a wedding he missed, implying that public accusations might be unnecessary if the relationship was simply over. Smith pointed out that Klay Thompson hadn’t publicly commented, leaving Smith to wonder about the other side of the story, even suggesting, “What if Klay said that you was out there getting your freak on?”

    The Public’s Business?

Smith’s core curiosity revolves around the modern tendency for public figures to share intimate details of their relationships and breakups. “Why is this propensity existing to be talking, telling everybody your business?” he pondered. “How is that any of our business? … If something go awry, you got to tell everybody?”

He concluded with a critique that touched on stereotypes, remarking, “These women just chirp, chirp, chirping all over the damn place.” This sentiment reflects a broader debate about how public figures navigate personal lives in the age of social media and constant public scrutiny.

    Broader Implications

This conversation touches on the evolving dynamics of modern dating and public relationships. The split has already ensnared other figures, like WNBA player Lexie Brown, who had to deny involvement with Thompson. It has also had a direct impact on Megan Thee Stallion’s career, leading to an earlier-than-expected departure from her Broadway run in “Moulin Rouge.”

What do you think about Stephen A. Smith’s take on celebrity breakups? Should personal matters stay private, or is it fair game when public figures share them? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

  • Sterling K. Brown on Black Femicide Crisis

The heartbreaking reality of Black femicide, the intentional killing of women with a gender-related motive, is a crisis that actor Sterling K. Brown is urging society to confront. In the wake of numerous tragic deaths of Black women at the hands of men they knew, Brown is calling for greater empathy and a deeper understanding between Black men and women.

    The Devastating Statistics of Femicide

The numbers are stark and deeply concerning. According to the Violence Policy Center, a staggering 9 out of 10 Black women murdered are killed by someone they know. Furthermore, Black women are murdered by men at four times the rate of white women. Despite making up only 14% of the female population, they represent 30% of women murdered by men. These statistics underscore a pervasive issue within intimate partner violence.

This grim reality is a backdrop to the film adaptation of Aleesha Harris’s play, “Is God Is,” where Sterling K. Brown plays a pivotal role. The film, starring alongside Vivica A. Fox and Erika Alexander, explores themes of revenge and the complexities of relationships, themes that resonate deeply with the current social climate.

A Call for Concert, Not Competition

In a candid conversation with theGrio, Brown reflected on the growing Black femicide crisis. He shared a powerful message for Black men, emphasizing the need for unity and partnership. “There is a way in which we can be in concert with one another and not in competition,” Brown stated.

He elaborated on how historical divisions, stemming from slavery, have been perpetuated by design to create conflict within the Black community. “Conflict has been created amongst us by design, because if we are beating up on each other and we’re in conflict with each other, then it keeps us from focusing on anything above and beyond us,” he explained. Brown encouraged men to recognize that women desire partnership and that walking side-by-side is mutually beneficial, urging them to resist the manufactured frustrations that keep the community divided.

    Empathy as the Starting Point

Brown also touched upon the complexities of female financial independence and self-protection, acknowledging the underlying tension and fear that can exist in relationships. He stressed the importance of sympathy and empathy for one another. “If you try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes for a minimum amount of time, you’d be like, ‘Oh, I understand how this could be a scary situation for that woman to enter into. [Or] I can understand how this man might feel emasculated by this particular thing.’”

The actor hopes that his role in “Is God Is” will spark conversations and encourage audiences to consider different perspectives. “I feel like the movie, hopefully, is an opportunity to enter into a conversation, to say, like, you know what? I’ve never considered things from your perspective, and I think that’s the beginning,” he said. Brown concluded by expressing his love for the community and his desire to see Black men and women succeed together.

Sterling K. Brown’s message is powerful. How can we foster more empathy and understanding between Black men and women? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below!
