Get ready, music lovers! The 2026 Grammy nominations are here, and they’re absolutely bursting with Black excellence. Forget the usual award season drama; this year, the buzz is all about the sheer volume of recognition for Black artists across the board. It’s a fantastic moment for music, celebrating the creativity and impact of artists who are shaping the soundscape.
Kendrick Lamar Leads the Pack
Leading the charge is none other than Kendrick Lamar, who’s snagged an impressive nine nominations! This includes major nods for Album of the Year and Rap Album of the Year for his latest work, “GNX.” This isn’t just a great year for Kendrick; it’s potentially a history-making one. If he takes home four more trophies, he’ll officially surpass Jay-Z as the most awarded rapper in Grammy history. Talk about legendary status!
His nominations are a testament to the power of “GNX,” an album released in November 2024, perfectly timed to be eligible for this year’s awards. It’s a focused collection that’s clearly resonated with the voting committee, building on the momentum from his previous successes.
A Strong Showing from Hip-Hop and R&B
The love for hip-hop extends beyond Kendrick. Clipse and Tyler, the Creator also earned five nominations each, with their albums “Let God Sort ‘Em Out” and “CHROMAKOPIA,” respectively, landing them a spot in the coveted Album of the Year category. This marks the first time since 2019 that three rap albums have been nominated for music’s biggest prize, showcasing the genre’s continued dominance and artistic evolution.
Rising R&B star Leon Thomas is also making serious waves. His album “MUTT” and its hit single have earned him nominations for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, and even a nod for Album of the Year. It’s incredible to see new talent like Thomas receiving such widespread recognition alongside established giants.
More Black Artists Making Their Mark
The list of celebrated Black artists doesn’t stop there! Doechii, who was a breakout star at the 2025 Grammys, is back with five nominations, largely thanks to her hit single “Anxiety.” SZA also secured five nominations, continuing her reign as a dominant force in contemporary music.
We’re also seeing well-deserved nominations for a diverse range of artists including Kehlani, Kaytranada, Anderson .Paak, FKA twigs, Chris Brown, Summer Walker, Durand Bernarr, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Bilal, Destin Conrad, Terrace Martin & Kenyon Dixon, and Coco Jones, among many others. It’s a powerful reminder of the rich talent pool within the Black music community.
