  • LSU Divine 9 Homecoming Step Show Celebrates Black Culture

Louisiana State University’s Divine 9 organizations recently brought their vibrant culture to campus with their annual Homecoming step show. This time-honored tradition, hosted by LSU’s National Panhellenic Council at the Union Theater on October 10, served as a powerful celebration of Black collegiate culture, heritage, and community.

A Showcase of Black Collegiate Culture

Eight fraternities and sororities participated in the showcase, competing for a cash prize and bragging rights until the next homecoming season. Beyond the competition, the step show honors LSU’s Black collegiate community, highlighting the diversity and impact of the Divine Nine organizations active on campus. Ryan Rice, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., shared with the LSU Reveille, “It’s a big representation of Black culture, especially in college. It displays the diversity at LSU, shows the historical legacy of the Divine Nine and highlights just how large and impactful our community is.”

Each group performed a skit, stepping to the beat of popular and classic hits, ranging from Glorilla’s “Let Her Cook” to Trill Family’s “Wipe Me Down.” Many performances also incorporated pop culture moments, with the Omega Psi Phi chapter drawing inspiration from the 2025 film “Sinners” for their winning routine.

    Bridging Community and Preserving Heritage

Step shows are a vital component of the Divine 9 experience, common at many HBCUs. They serve as an expression of unity, creativity, and heritage, bridging the broader Black Greek community with the entire campus. For LSU’s Divine 9, performing at the step show holds particular significance, especially during a time when the celebration of diversity faces challenges.

As crackdowns on DEI initiatives continue across educational institutions, LSU’s continued support for this cultural tradition serves not only to engage audiences but also to remind them of the importance of preserving such heritage. This year’s competition saw the Ques and the Deltas take home the top honors, but the event’s true victory lies in the vibrant showcase of community and culture that continues to thrive at the Baton Rouge institution.
