In a deeply personal revelation, Gucci Mane has opened up about his struggles with mental health, revealing diagnoses of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in his new memoir, ‘Episodes.’ He and his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, recently sat down with ‘The Breakfast Club’ to discuss their journey managing these challenges.
Keyshia Ka’oir’s Protective Measures
Ka’oir detailed the protective measures she takes to shield her husband and his public image during his episodes. “I take his apps off his phone. First thing I do, I delete Instagram. I delete everything. Even if I got to change his password, I’m changing it because I don’t need the public to know he’s having an episode,” she explained. She emphasized her control over his social media presence to prevent public knowledge of his struggles.
She described the signs of an impending episode, noting that he becomes withdrawn, doesn’t eat or sleep, and communicates with unusual punctuation in his texts. Ka’oir stated that she can identify these signs and intervene, preventing full-blown episodes. “Now, before the episodes come, I catch it. So that’s why he hasn’t had another one,” she asserted.
Episodes of Generosity and Embarrassment
Gucci Mane admitted that during manic episodes, he would impulsively give away expensive jewelry to friends, who he felt took advantage of his condition. “They knew I wasn’t well, but they’d take it,” he shared. This led him to cut off those friends after his release from jail, realizing they had exploited his vulnerability.
He also attributed his infamous 2013 Twitter rant, where he called out numerous music industry figures, to being unwell. The rapper expressed deep embarrassment and hurt over his words, noting that apologizing to those he wronged, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Rick Ross, brought significant relief after his release from prison.
Fatherhood as a Stabilizing Force
Gucci Mane credits fatherhood with helping him maintain stability. Since the birth of his son, Ice, in 2020, and daughter, Iceland, in 2023, he has not experienced a major episode. The rapper expressed a strong desire to be a present and reliable father, stating, ‘I cannot ever let my kids see me like that, and I can never not be on point to be needed to handle the business of raising the baby.’
His memoir, ‘Episodes,’ co-written with music journalist Kathy Iandoli, chronicles his life and mental health journey, accompanied by a 23-track album of the same name. The book and album offer a comprehensive look at his experiences and his ongoing commitment to managing his well-being.
