Get ready to return to the hallowed halls of Hillman College! Netflix has officially announced the cast for its highly anticipated sequel series to the beloved sitcom “A Different World.” This new chapter will follow Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she navigates her own college experience.
Meet the New Generation of Hillman Students
Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon is set to star as Deborah Wayne, described as the “free-spirited, well-intentioned yet rebellious” youngest child of Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy’s iconic characters. The series will explore Deborah’s freshman year at her parents’ alma mater, where she’ll grapple with their legacy while striving to forge her own path. She’ll be joined by a fresh ensemble cast, including Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel.
Together, this new class of Hillman students will explore themes of friendship, freedom, and self-discovery, all while living in the shadow of college royalty. The series promises to blend humor and heart, continuing the legacy of celebrating HBCU pride.
A Stellar Creative Team Returns
The revival is spearheaded by Felicia Pride, known for her work on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Queen Sugar,” who will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Adding to the excitement, legendary director Debbie Allen is returning to the “A Different World” universe. Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, will direct three episodes of the sequel, including the premiere. She shared her enthusiasm, stating, “There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World. Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically black colleges and gave a strong voice and platform for Young Black America.”
Original series writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood are also returning as executive producers, alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner. The Blythewoods, who met on the set of the original “A Different World,” expressed their deep connection to the show, calling its return a “continuation of that legacy — one rooted in love, purpose, and possibility.”
Honoring a Groundbreaking Legacy
When “A Different World” first premiered in 1987, it was a cultural phenomenon, significantly impacting enrollment at HBCUs and redefining representation on television. This Netflix sequel aims to build on that powerful legacy, introducing Hillman College to a new generation while delighting long-time fans. The ten-episode, single-camera half-hour comedy series will join Netflix’s slate of culturally rich comedies.
