Get ready to head back to Hillman College! Netflix is bringing the iconic sitcom “A Different World” back to television with a brand-new sequel. This modern take on the beloved series will follow Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she embarks on her own college journey.
Meet the New Hillman Class
Leading the cast as Deborah Wayne is Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, known for her role in “Hell’s Kitchen.” She’ll be joined by a vibrant ensemble of new students, including Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Kennedi Reece as Hazel, and Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir. Together, they’ll navigate the ups and downs of college life, friendships, and finding their place in the world, all while living under the legacy of their influential parents.
A Stellar Creative Team Returns
The revival is in capable hands, with Felicia Pride, whose credits include “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Queen Sugar,” serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Adding to the excitement, legendary director Debbie Allen is returning to the Hillman universe to direct three episodes, including the premiere. Allen, who helmed 83 episodes of the original series, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “There couldn’t be a better time to reboot ‘A Different World.’ Our show changed lives and gave a strong voice to Young Black America.”
Original series writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood are also back as executive producers, alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner. This blend of new talent and returning original creatives promises a revival that honors the past while embracing the future.
Building on a Powerful Legacy
When “A Different World” first aired in 1987, it was groundbreaking, significantly boosting enrollment at HBCUs and redefining representation on television. This new Netflix series aims to capture that same spirit, introducing Hillman College and its unique culture to a new generation of viewers. Pride shared her excitement, saying, “We’re celebrating its roots while reimagining it for today’s world.”
The ten-episode, half-hour comedy will join Netflix’s lineup of culturally relevant shows, promising humor, heart, and a celebration of legacy. It’s clear that class is officially back in session at Hillman College.
