Imagine channeling the infectious energy and pure joy of carnival into your fitness routine. That’s exactly what Krista Martins has achieved with Wukkout!®, her unique dance fitness program that fuses the vibrant rhythms of soca music with heart-pumping cardio. For Martins, it’s more than just a workout; it’s a way to share the mental freedom and exhilaration she experiences at carnival with others.
From Passion to Business: The Birth of Wukkout!
Raised in a Guyanese household, Martins grew up surrounded by soca music, basement parties, and the electrifying atmosphere of carnival. While she always dreamed of being a dancer, fear initially held her back. However, her deep love for soca and carnival fueled a vision to capture that unique feeling of being “completely out of my head” and share it. “I always knew I wanted to find a way to bottle up that mental freedom and share it with people,” she explained.
The idea for Wukkout! came to life organically when Martins proposed teaching a soca class at the dance studio where she worked. “I had been toying with this idea of playing with soca, and the studio owner was like, great! I had never taught a soca class,” she recalled with a laugh. What started as a novel class quickly revealed its potential, and within six months, Martins realized she had built a business.
Community at the Core
Celebrating 12 years this summer, Wukkout! has cultivated a strong sense of community, which Martins considers its most special aspect. “We’re a big family,” she said. Classes are held across New York City, drawing participants from various boroughs and even neighboring states, all united by the same vibrant energy. “It’s like a family reunion. Everyone knows that they can come to Wukkout! and be exactly who they are.”
The impact of Wukkout! extends far beyond just a fun workout. Martins shared moving testimonials from clients whose lives have been positively transformed. Some find solace and a way to grieve through the music, connecting with memories of loved ones who played soca. Others have experienced significant health improvements, with older participants reporting better blood pressure control and even doctors crediting the workouts for improved heart health after strokes.
A Legacy of Joy
These stories fuel Martins’ purpose and drive. “If I can leave a legacy of bringing people joy in a world that’s very difficult to find joy in, I’ll be okay with that,” she expressed. Wukkout! stands as a powerful example of how passion, community, and a unique cultural fusion can create a business that not only entertains but also genuinely improves people’s lives.
