  • Future Sued Over ‘Mixtape Pluto’ Cover Art

Atlanta rapper Future is currently embroiled in a copyright infringement lawsuit following the release of his 2024 project, ‘Mixtape Pluto.’ Photographer Garey C. Gomez has filed a lawsuit accusing Future, his label Freebandz, and associated companies of using his creative assets without authorization for promotional purposes.

    Allegations of Unauthorized Use

The lawsuit, filed on October 2nd, claims that the defendants “copied Gomez’s copyrighted works from the internet in order to advertise, market and promote their business activities.” Gomez alleges that two of his photographs, which are officially registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, were used without his permission. Notably, one of these images served as the cover art for ‘Mixtape Pluto’ and was also repurposed for merchandise sold online.

Gomez is seeking damages for “irreparable harm” caused by the alleged infringement. While the lawsuit doesn’t specify an exact monetary amount, it does request “profits attributable to the infringement,” indicating a desire to recoup any revenue generated from the unauthorized use of his work.

    ‘Mixtape Pluto’s Success

Released on September 20, 2024, ‘Mixtape Pluto’ marked Future’s seventeenth mixtape and his first to be commercially released. The project achieved significant commercial success, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 129,000 album-equivalent units sold in its first week. This marked Future’s third No. 1 album within a six-month period, following his collaborations with Metro Boomin, ‘We Don’t Trust You’ and ‘We Still Don’t Trust You.’

    Legal Ramifications and Artist’s Response

This copyright infringement lawsuit adds a legal challenge to Future’s recent string of commercial successes. While the rapper has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit, the claims highlight the importance of securing proper licensing and permissions for creative assets used in music projects and merchandise. The outcome of this case could have implications for how artists and their teams handle visual content in the future.

  • Rod Wave Countersues Promoter Over $27M Lawsuit

Rapper Rod Wave is fighting back against a $27 million lawsuit filed by promoter Grizzly Touring. Rod Wave has filed a counterclaim, asserting that the promoter’s alleged scheduling and production mishaps made it “logistically impossible” for him to complete his “Last Lap” tour. He hopes a judge will rule in his favor, allowing him to proceed with his upcoming “The Redemption Experience” tour, set to begin in December.

    Allegations of Promoter Mismanagement

Grizzly Touring, a joint venture involving AG Entertainment, Mammoth Touring, and CTS Eventim, filed their lawsuit last month, claiming Rod Wave owes them $27 million in advances and is contractually obligated for future tours. However, Rod Wave’s counterclaim, filed on Sunday, October 12th, argues that Grizzly breached the contract first. His legal team alleges that the promoter repeatedly changed the tour schedule, canceled concerts at the last minute, and failed to properly manage equipment logistics.

The counterclaim states that Rod Wave “frequently learned only at the last minute that a show had been rescheduled, often only after seeing tickets for these rescheduled shows available online.” Out of the 35 originally scheduled shows, only 12 reportedly occurred as planned. Rod Wave’s legal team described Grizzly’s motion as “baseless” and an “unfortunate extension of its prior failed attempts to trap Rod Wave into an exclusive arrangement.”

Seeking Damages and Freedom from Contract

Rod Wave’s attorney, James Sammataro, stated that Grizzly is not entitled to “improperly requested specific performance or equivalent injunctive relief, which effectively amounts to an indentured servitude.” He added that Rod Wave has lost confidence in Grizzly as a promoter and no longer wishes to perform services for them or receive their services. Furthermore, Rod Wave claims his ex-agent, Beau Williams, was paid $1.8 million “under the table” by Grizzly to “sneak” a five-tour exclusivity clause into the contract. He is seeking financial and emotional damages from Grizzly Touring.

The “Last Lap” tour, initially scheduled from October to December 2024, saw several postponements extending to February 2025 before Rod Wave announced the cancellation of remaining dates in January. This countersuit aims to resolve the contractual disputes and allow Rod Wave to move forward with his planned “Redemption Experience” tour.

  • Tasha K Claims Nicki Minaj Filed Police Report Against Stylist

Tasha K has made a new claim regarding Nicki Minaj, alleging that the rapper filed a police report against her stylist, DiAndre Tristian, for stealing money. According to Tasha K’s tweet, the alleged theft involves unauthorized purchases totaling approximately $25,000.

    Allegations of Credit Card Fraud

Minaj herself recently took to social media to reveal that multiple individuals had made unauthorized charges on her American Express card over a two-month period, amounting to roughly $25,000. She expressed disbelief, noting that some perpetrators couldn’t explain how they obtained the new card number, and stated that she had filed the initial report weeks ago, expecting arrests. “They’re all going to jail,” she wrote.

Minaj also accused one of the alleged perpetrators of using a tracking device to monitor her movements, which reportedly led authorities to their phone number and subsequent capture. “You can’t MAKE this sh*t up,” she exclaimed, attributing the outcome to divine intervention. She mentioned confronting some individuals involved, questioning if they would face RICO charges or try to save themselves.

    Tasha K’s Specific Claims

  • Mal: Drake’s UMG Lawsuit Isn’t Over Yet

While a judge recently dismissed Drake’s defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) concerning Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” the legal saga might not be over. According to commentator Mal, Drake’s legal team is expected to pursue an appeal, suggesting the rapper’s fight against UMG is far from concluded.

    The Dismissal and the Appeal

Judge Jeannette A. Vargas dismissed the case last Thursday, ruling that Lamar’s lyrics, which label Drake a “pedophile,” should not be taken as factual statements within the context of a rap battle. Vargas noted that the “incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants” would not lead a reasonable listener to believe the song imparts verifiable facts about Drake.

Mal shared his perspective in a clip circulating online, stating, “People have to know that his lawyers and his team are gonna appeal this and take this to another level. I don’t know if people know that. This is not over with.” When asked if Drake should move on, Mal questioned, “Would you? If you and your team, your lawyers had things in your possession that prove what you’re saying is correct.”

UMG’s Response and Drake’s Legal Strategy

Drake’s legal team has indeed confirmed their plan to appeal the ruling. “We intend to appeal today’s ruling, and we look forward to the Court of Appeals reviewing it,” they stated, as reported by Pitchfork. This indicates a strong commitment to pursuing the case further, despite the initial dismissal.

UMG responded to the court’s decision by calling the lawsuit “an affront to all artists and their creative expression.” They expressed pleasure with the dismissal and affirmed their commitment to promoting Drake’s music and investing in his career. The core of Drake’s argument was that UMG defamed him by promoting Lamar’s song, which contained the serious accusation.

  • A$AP Rocky: ‘Don’t Be Dumb’ Release Date is a Surprise

Fans eagerly awaiting A$AP Rocky’s next album, “Don’t Be Dumb,” might need to adjust their expectations for a release date announcement. In a recent interview with Numéro Magazine, Rocky declared he’s finished sharing specific dates for the project, which has been years in the making. He intends to let the music speak for itself, promising a surprise drop.

A New Approach to Album Releases

“To be honest, I don’t want to talk about release dates anymore,” Rocky stated. “I’d rather let the music speak for itself. One day, you’ll wake up and see what’s coming up. I was a bit foolish giving dates last time… Today, I want to make it clear. You’ll just have to wait and enjoy the record when it’ll come out.”

This shift in strategy comes after the “Don’t Be Dumb” project was initially slated for an August 2024 release but was indefinitely delayed just days prior. Rocky has already teased several singles from the album, including “Highjack,” “Tailor Swif,” “Ruby Rosary,” and “Pray4DaGang,” keeping fans engaged despite the extended wait.

Years in the Making, New Challenges

Back in March, Rocky confirmed to GQ that the album was in the mixing and mastering stages. He acknowledged the public’s anticipation, saying, “People are tired of hearing about updates about the album. They’re just ready to get this sh*t, you know what I’m saying?” He also mentioned challenging himself with a “different tactic, degree, or finesse” for this project.

Adding another layer to the extended wait, Rocky and Rihanna welcomed their third child together last month. This personal milestone, coupled with his desire for a surprise release, suggests fans may indeed have to wait a bit longer to experience “Don’t Be Dumb” in its entirety. The album remains one of the most anticipated hip-hop releases, with Rocky’s new approach promising an exciting unveiling when the time is right.
